JAMES S. RICKARDS HIGH SCHOOL SPECIAL LISTSERV [cid:image002.jpg@01D8C8F9.1D76B380] Mr. Douglas Cook Principal Parents and Guardians: Please be aware of a new social media challenge encouraging participants to eat a Paqui single spicy tortilla chip and refrain from eating or drinking anything for a full hour. After eating this single tortilla chip containing capsaicin individuals can experience mouth irritation, pain, or burning along with intestinal discomfort. Capsaicin consumption can also cause more serious health problems, including chest pain, heart palpitations, and even heart attacks. Consumption of larger amounts of capsaicin can also cause repeated vomiting that can lead to life-threatening esophageal damage. Because of this, people should use caution when consuming foods or products that contain capsaicin. If you discover that your child has consumed this chip, milk may be more effective than water in relieving mouth and throat irritation. Wash hands thoroughly after handling this chip and flush eyes with warm water if contact is made. If your child unfortunately participates in the challenge with worrisome symptoms, get guidance from Poison Control immediately.
