In AP Human Geography we have been exploring culture, including the nuances of dialect, and how isolation and connection can either create or lessen differences in language. We are also learning about the diffusion of religions throughout the world, and how they are a major aspect of our cultural identities.
For IB Social and Cultural Anthropology students in their first year, we are wrapping up their first ethnography, Preschool in Three Cultures, and will be getting in some practice for their IB exams before they head out for Winter Break. For those in their second year, they have dug into their ethnography for the year, Sweetness and Power, which has led us on an 8,000+ year journey so far from New Guinea in the Pacific to the Caribbean Islands, mapping the influence sugar has had on early agriculture through the Age of Exploration. As we work our way through the book, we'll explore more of how sugar has shaped Western culture through to the 1980s, when the book was written.
In IB Theory of Knowledge, the IB juniors have read through some of the subject guides regarding the IB's expectations for the Extended Essay, a capstone project they will officially embark on in the next few weeks, and will be working with a Supervisor one-on-one during the rest of their junior year, finishing the essay (a maximum of 4,000 words) during their senior year.
