Parents,

Over the last several hours, Hurricane Michael has grown in both strength and intensity. According to most forecasts, it will likely make landfall somewhere along the coast of the Big Bend followed by a gradual turn towards the northeast and Leon County. As a result, we have made the decision to shut things down until the storm has passed.

Leon County Schools will be closing effective at 5pm tonight and remain closed for the rest of the week.

The National Weather Service anticipates tropical storm force winds arriving as early as tomorrow evening. Our hope is that you will have time tomorrow to secure your home or make evacuation plans as necessary. Please use this time to prepare for the safety of your family. Property can be replaced, but human lives cannot. Most forecasts anticipate the storm's arrival on Wednesday and into Thursday. Following Michael's departure we will survey the damage as quickly as possible and make a decision about reopening next week.

We will be adjusting grading requirements and the first nine weeks' report card dates after we get a clearer picture of the impact of Michael. In addition, we have already requested that FDOE take this event into consideration as we report FTE this week.

We are preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best and will continue to stay in communication with you as much as possible throughout this event. Please follow our social media for immediate updates:

Find us at www.Facebook.com/LeonSchools<http://www.Facebook.com/LeonSchools> or on Twitter @LeonSchools and in Instagram @LeonCountySchools.

Our top priority is always the safety of our children.

[Thank you, Danielle Hess Reading Coach Pineview Elementary]
