[cid:image001.jpg@01D008CE.AD14A180]Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Remember there is no school on November 26 - 28, 2014. Thank you to all of our parents and community members for your support of our school. Without you, we are not at our best! Your continued support and presence in our school is more valuable than you may know. We encourage our students to take this extended time to:

1. Work on their science fair projects and use the input received from the science teachers to produce the highest quality project possible. Classroom projects will be entered into the school science fair. Winners of the school science fair will be invited to the district science fair. Winners of the district science fair will be invited to participate at the state science fair. This is a heavily weighted project assessment and all students are encouraged to do their best!

2. Read for a minimum of 30 minutes each day

3. Begin research for the upcoming history fair project (topics received from social studies teachers).

4. Check the student Pinpoint Grades and work to complete any missing or incomplete assignments

5. Refocus and reenergize for the upcoming mid-term/mid-semester exams

6. Use study notes and read ahead

2nd Annual
Griffin Middle School
Turkey Trot 1 mile race

November 25, 2014

Registration: Proceeds benefit the Griffin Physical Education Department

Race: The one mile race was held in the gymnasium due to inclement conditions. Each grade level raced separately.

Awards: Prizes included frozen turkeys plus non-perishable meal fixings! These meals were awarded to the top 3 fastest boys and girls in each grade level and the fastest teacher. There was a GRAND PRIZE for the boy and girl with the fastest overall time.

We would like to thank the City Church Tallahassee, Loli & The Bean (a gift shop next to the Fresh Market), and the Junior League of Tallahassee. With their financial support and in-kind donations we were able to send more than 20 kids home with turkeys AND food for the holidays.

Thank you to Coach Yale, and Coach Cooper for organizing and facilitating this event. Ms. Flowers, Mrs. Tucker, Mr. Singleton, and Mrs. Jefferson for your valuable contributions to the success of this event. We were able to feed 2o+ families during this season:)

We would like to also thank the Tallahassee Area Coalition - Center of Excellence, National Achievers and Believers Societies for donating meals for 2 of our families. These thoughts of kindness are not taken lightly. We are so appreciative for the kindness shown to our families through this community support.

Parents, don't forget to view your child's pinpoint grades daily! With our joint effort, our students will continue to excel! The end of the 2nd nine weeks is 3 weeks away. Please work with you child to view grades and get the necessary assignments turned in.

EXCEL-ABRATION!!!
We are excited to announce that a vast majority of our students are passing their core academic classes with a 70% or higher. 160 students were rewarded with an EXCEL-ABRATION social event twice during the second nine weeks progress report! Million Book Challenge

This year, Superintendent Pons has given us the charge of reading 1 million books, district-wide, by the end of the 2014-2015 school year. His goal is [image004.png@01CFD3F5] to get students to love and enjoy reading so that they will be lifelong readers. In a recent interview he stated, "The goal isn't to make them read. The goal is to teach them to enjoy reading." Griffin supports the Superintendent's efforts. We want to surpass last year's numbers, 365 from Destiny Circulation and 255 Summer Reading, and we need your help! Please encourage your child to read for at least 30 minutes each day and visit the Media Center to take an AR quiz on what they've read. We will do a monthly tally and as we move closer to meeting our goal, we will keep you up-to-date on how we are progressing. We are so excited about this initiative, Go Tigers!

What is Bullying?
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose. Griffin Middle School will not tolerate bullying.
Your administrative team is available to assist you when you need us. Best wishes for a very good school year. Please share this information with your neighbors who have children attending Griffin. The Griffin List Serv is published every Friday with upcoming calendar events and other information the keep parents informed.

Fee-Based Before School Program

Grandparents Program

The grandparents program is called "Grandparents as Parents" or GaP, for short. It is a support group for grandparents and other relatives raising another person's children. They meet on the last Wednesday of every month at the main public library downtown for a free catered luncheon at noon with an educational presentation, exhibits from community agencies, health screenings and access to representatives from DCF and legal services. But reservations are required so that they can have enough food for everyone! If you are interested in this program, call Karen Boebinger at 891-4027 or email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> to make a reservation. They would LOVE to have anyone who is raising a relative's child join us for these lunches, or for a GaP family picnic, outing or holiday party.
