Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund
Leon County Schools have put together a campaign (Leon's Caring Schools) to help the relief
effort for the victims of the tsunami disaster. The goal is one dollar per student and per employee
at each school. If the goal is reached, the amount should exceed $40,000. The campaign will run
from January 10th - January 24th. At the end of the campaign, all proceeds will be given to the
Red Cross and designated for the tsunami victims. Dollars may be sent to classroom teachers.

Leon County Special Olympics Athletes Need Your Help!
Visit Publix Stores between now and January 27th and you can help raise money for Leon County
Special Olympics!
When you and your family and friends are shopping at Publix Supermarkets (proud sponsor of
SOFL) between January 6 - 27, be sure and purchase your very own Special Olympics paper torch
at the check-out registers for $1, $3, or $5 to support Leon County's local athletes! Money raised
during the sale of the Torches help pay for buses and meals when athletes travel to other towns to
compete. It also helps buy uniforms and sports equipment to use when training and competing at
the Games.
Participating Stores in Tallahassee:
Thomasville Road at Killearn Center Blvd.
  Thomasville Road at Bannerman Road
Capital Circle Northeast at Centerville Road
  Ocala Road and Tennessee

Test-Taking Tips
* Remind your child to listen and follow directions. Before giving a test, teachers tell students
things they need to know-and that can make the difference between a good or bad score. Should
students try to guess if they're not sure of an answer? Should the essay question be written on
every other line? Make sure your child listens to what the teacher has to say.
* Give your child practice in following directions. Make a game of it. Give him/her a recipe and
ask him/her to follow it. Or, ask him/her to look through a newspaper article and circle all the
nouns. Try timing your children as they complete these tasks-tests often have a time limit.
* Make sure your child is physically ready to take the test. Aside from studying, the next best
preparation is a good night's sleep before the test. Make sure he/she eats a good breakfast.
Encourage him/her to wear a sweater that he/she can remove-there's nothing worse than being
too hot or too cold.
* These tips are from QuickTips - The Parent Institute.

Nutrition Tip of the Week
Think before you eat! Use hunger as your guide for eating.
Think about why you are eating. Sometimes we eat for other reasons besides hunger, like being
bored, nervous or tired.
Fresh is Best: Eat more fresh foods than processed foods.
Processed foods come in packages like boxes, bags, cans, etc. They have been altered from their
natural state. Eating too many of these types of foods can be bad for our health. Focus on eating
more fresh foods like whole fruits and vegetables, fresh meat, etc. Think about how foods are
naturally as they come from the earth. A good guide is to shop the perimeter (the outside walls)
of the grocery store.

Physical Activity Tip of the Week
Plan Your Walking Route:
Plot your route in the car first. You will be able to plan ahead, measure the distance, track your
speed and measure your progress.
Optimum Target: 3 miles, 3 times a week
Exercise and Your Heart:
The heart pumps more efficiently when you exercise regularly. Your lungs expand to take in more
oxygen from the air. Your skin gets twice as much blood during exercise, giving you a healthy
glow. During exercise muscles get 12 times as much blood as normal, giving them extra oxygen
and nutrients. For the best effect, try to work your heart hard for twenty minutes at least 3 times
per week.
