Good Morning, Chaires Family:

Below is some information about Fortifyfl reporting and the recent changes to SESIR.

The Florida Department of Education has updated the names and coding of events that are to be reported in the School Environmental Safety Incident Reporting (hereafter referred to as SESIR.) SESIR pertains to safety incidents that occur on campus. SESIR events are not exclusive to students, and anyone who commits a SESIR worthy act on a school campus will have their action listed on that schools SESIR report.

On January 17th, new guidelines were introduced for SESIR reporting from Rule 6A-1.0017,F.A.C, School Environmental Safety Incident Reporting. In summary, the changes have expanded the reporting requirements of schools and school districts to the Department of Education. The new changes have expanded the circumstances where SESIR incidents are required to be reported; regardless of whether law enforcement action was taken, whether the offender had the capacity to understand their behavior, or whether criminal charges were filed by law enforcement.

Additionally, the changes have also revised the 16 SESIR incident categories and definitions. The Department of Education has recognized a need for incident terminology to be uniform across all school districts. While SESIR terminology appears to mirror the criminal justice system terminology, we think it’s important for you to know, SESIR data is only used for DOE reporting purposes. As changes to these requirements come, we will inform you all of what is required from us.

FortifyFl is the anonymous reporting application created after the events of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The app is created and monitored by the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for students, staff, parents and other campus visitors to report suspicious activity on campus, or off campus activity that has the potential to cause a threat on campus. Around the school, you will see posters with QR codes that will take you to the page to submit a tip. You can also submit a tip through the link on the district and our schools website. There is also a Fortifyfl tile on your child’s Classlink home page. Before a tip is can be sent, a notice is given about the potential consequences of submitting a purposefully false report. We encourage our students that if they See Something or Hear Something, they need to Say Something, and we do not want to discourage your children from reporting what they believe is a legitimate threat. We do however take false reporting very seriously. In accordance with Florida law, if after an investigation, it is determined that the student knowing submitted a false tip, they could face criminal penalties.

This is not to discourage your children from submitting tips. If your child is unsure about whether they saw or heard something, we still encourage them to make a report. The potential criminal penalties are only for those making intentional false reports.

Thank you all and have a great weekend.
