Monday, January 16, 2017, as a country, we will celebrate the life and historic significance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

There has been so much spoken about what Dr. King accomplished in his life. I cannot capture into words what his teachings, his life, and his legacy has meant to me personally. As a person of color, I do not take for granted the pain, suffering, and injustice that Dr. King and others before (and after) him endured. This is made a bit more real given my position as leader of our school learning community and role model to the next generation. I wear Dr. King’s words proudly as a badge of honor. His words inspire me to be a difference maker.

So Monday, school will not be in session in the Leon County School District. I strongly encourage individuals to enjoy the day off, family, friends, and perhaps even some good food. I also strongly encourage individuals to think about Dr. King. Think about what his journey means to.

Happy Birthday Dr. King!
