Hodgetta A. Huckaby, Principal Kimberly McFarland, Assistant Principal

From Mrs. Huckaby's Desk:
Since this is the month for giving thanks, I would like to take this opportunity to thank
all of you who have made special effort to attend a conference with your child’s
teacher/s. I am sure that such positive involvement on your part will be beneficial to
your child/children today as well as in the future. Showing your concern and support
are essential to his/her success.

As parents and guardians, you are in a unique position for building your child’s self-
esteem. A child who feels good about himself or herself is more likely to be
successful at school and in life. Here are some tips that I would like to share with
you for building or boosting your child’s self-esteem.
 • Praise your child often. Offer praise in front of other family members and friends.
 • Include your child in family discussions. Listen to what he/she has to say and
show respect for their thoughts and opinions.
 • Do not compare your child to other children. Accept your child’s shortcomings and
give positive recognition for their strengths.
 • Tell your child you love him or her often.
 • Let your child know that you understand their feelings.
 • Let your child know that you will be there for him or her whenever your child has a
problem or worry.
 • Leave notes with special messages- when you leave the house, in your child’s
lunch bag or under his or her pillow.
•During the Thanksgiving season and throughout the year, thank your
 child for being so special.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and thank you again for your efforts and
continued support!
Best Wishes,
Hodgetta A. Huckaby

Positive Action Words of the Weeks
November 24th: Responsibility
December 1st: Time and Energy
During this unit, students will be taught to take care of resources: time, energy,
possessions, money, talents, thoughts, actions, and feelings. The following activities
are just a few ways to help your child learn responsibility and self-control.
* Talk to your child about a talent he or she might want to develop by taking lessons
or by practicing at home.
• Children often don’t fully understand their emotions. It is helpful for them to think
about and to hear others talk about their own emotions.
• Work with your child in setting up a time-management plan. Agree upon how
much time per day or per week can be spent watching television. Start with existing
commitments (school, sleep, lessons) and then discuss and establish a schedule for
worthwhile activities: practice, study, reading, play etc. (At some grade levels, your
child will do this as an assignment; help and support this activity when it happens.
• Discuss an emotion such as fear, loneliness, jealousy, or worry. Give examples of
times when you feel such an emotion and how you manage it. Have everyone in the
family participate with similar suggestions, but direct the thinking by asking
appropriate questions.
• Pay your child an agreed-upon amount of money for a certain chore. Encourage
the child to decide what he or she would like to buy with the money, and then help
with a plan to save for that goal.
