From the Principal, Mrs. M. Gayle

This has been a Tiger-riffic week! Our students will receive their agenda
books on Monday, August 29 2005. Please remember to review these books each
evening. Use the books as a way to communicate with your child’s teachers,
and sign the agenda book each evening. This book is an excellent
communication and organizational tool for our students. The first agenda
book is provided by the school. The second agenda book will be sold to your
child for $6.00. All students MUST have an agenda book at all times!

I would like to thank all parents, supporters and students for
making our Mandatory Parent Meeting a huge success! We had over 800 people
in attendance. Our teachers were delighted to share their program goals,
student centered activities and innovative plans for this school year with
you. I received so many parent comments that the evening was well organized
and a good use of time. Our students were proud to introduce their parents
to our teachers and administrators. It was a great evening thanks to you!

Finally, I would like to encourage you to support our PTO Fall
Fundraiser. Please look over the contents of this catalog and make plans to
show it to friends, family members and co-workers. Our fundraiser will end
on September 9, 2005 so let’s get busy, parents! Have a safe and positive
weekend, Tigers!

Counselors’ Corner - Mrs. Jones & Mrs. Gitlin (488.4200)

Students in the middle grades have a lot to think about. Most of them can
tell you all the lyrics to all of their favorite songs. They know the
telephone numbers of their friends (and their friends’ friends). But can
they remember what they’re supposed to do for math class tomorrow? Not
likely. Helping students in the middle grades learn how to organize
themselves is one of the biggest challenges facing parents and schools. But
there are some ways you can help:

Have a regular place for homework. This location should be well lit, quiet
and stocked with the necessary supplies to complete assigned homework.

Get in a homework routine. It’s also best to have a regular time to do
homework.

Set goals. At the start of every homework session, have your child look
through his/her agenda book to establish what needs to be done. Now check
off everything as your child completes it. At the end of the homework time,
make sure everything goes back into the book bag, which gets placed near
the door.
