Helping Our Students Learn: Emphasize Listening to Boost Learning

Students spend most of their class time listening and learning. Here are
some ways to build your child’s listening skills:

Ask Questions like “What stood out to you?” Good listeners remember the
most important points. After your child reads or listens to something at
home, see if she can recall key ideas. Encourage him to do this in class,
too.

Paraphrase together during dinner. Take turns describing what happened
that day or talk about something in the news. Each listener must correctly
restate the speaker’s ideas before the conversation continues.

Write one fact note cards. Read a paragraph or so aloud from your child’s
textbook. On a note card, have her write down one important detail she
heard. As he learns to recognize main ideas, he’ll create a set of helpful
flashcards.

We are proud to announce another technological breakthrough at Griffin
Middle School called SchoolNotes.com. This website is a way to keep
informed about your child’s classroom assignments and make sure that the
proper assignments are recorded in your child’s agenda book. No student
numbers or pin numbers are needed for this site. Just go to
www.schoolnotes.com and enter our school’s zip code 32304. You will then
see a list of pilot teachers who use this site. Click on your child’s
teachers and then ensure that your child has the right information for
success. Check the website each week as each teacher will update their
assignments on a weekly basis. Please note that this is a pilot project
and all GMS teachers are NOT using this service at this time.
