Where Do I Go with GEOGRAPHY?

“This land is your land…” This song rings truer if you study geography.
Geography is the study of relationships between people and places. It
encompasses physical science, environmental science, and social sciences,
including economics. The terrain of geography is so varied that geography
majors are among the most employable liberal-arts majors. So, where can
you go with geography?

Science Street:
Hydrologist—study water both at and below the Earth’s surface. Their work
helps in flood control and environmental conservation.
Meteorologist—they don’t just forecast the weather—they study it! They
focus on climate, atmospheric conditions, air pressure, wind systems, and
global warming.

Technology Terrain:
Cartographer—Where would we be without maps? LOST! Cartography is the
science and art of mapmaking. Most maps are drawn on computers using the
familiar grid of longitude and latitude lines. The government employees
cartographers to make maps for various departments.
Remote Sensing Analyst—If you love checking out your neighborhood on
Google Maps you might enjoy a career as a remote sensing analyst. These
analysts interpret aerial photos and satellite images to help map large
areas. Analysts must be trained to identify a variety of land forms.

Business Boulevard:
Real Estate Analyst—When a business is starting or growing, real estate
analysts research the physical geography and the demographics of various
areas to recommend the best location.
Market Researcher—Will banana flavored gum sell in Seattle? Businesses
need such information and market researchers can get it by studying the
buying habits and sales patterns in particular regions.
