Students dreaming of a “big break” can compete for their moment in the
spotlight with the Florida KidCare “Act-Out for Health” contest
[www.actout4health.org]. Middle school and high school students in Leon
County are being asked to write and produce television commercials
promoting Florida KidCare, the state-subsidized health care program for
children under 19.
“A recent study by the University of Florida Institute for Child Health
Policy revealed the highest percentage of uninsured children in the state
are kids between the ages of 12 and 18,” said Rich Robleto, executive
director of Florida KidCare. “This contest allows kids in this age-range,
whether they have insurance or not, to share their perceptions and thoughts
about getting good healthcare and why families should enroll in the KidCare
program.”
The 30 or 60 second commercials will be judged on their creativity and
ability to promote KidCare benefits to a diverse population. The winning
commercial may air on television stations across the state during Florida
KidCare’s 2008 “Back to School” campaign from July through October.
First, second and third place prizes will be awarded. Prizes include Best
Buy gift cards for each student that helped produce the winning commercial,
and a monetary donation will be given to the students’ school or
organization. All of the winning students will be invited to the Florida
State University film school for a guided tour.
The contest is only open to students in Leon County. To receive an entry
form and contest guidelines, visit www.actout4health.org. You can also
contact Annie Butterworth, communications coordinator for the Florida
Healthy Kids Corporation, at (850) 224-5437, ext. 6114.
Florida KidCare must receive all commercial entries by Friday, May 9, 2008.
