Ft. Braden School Advisory Council Meeting Minutes for 9/12/02

The SAC met in the guidance conference room from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.
The following members were present: P. Green, M. Herring, T. McLain,
G. Pendelton, R. Prosser, B. Boles, M. Steverson, B. Jackson, M.
Ward, D. Duncan, C. Williams, N. Porter, D. Woods, J. Jackson.

Mr. Green opened the meeting with a brief description of the
membership requirements. The new school representatives have
already been elected.

The slate of parent representatives will be submitted to the PTO for a
vote at the September 26th meeting.

The Final Report for the 2001/02 School Improvement Plan was
reviewed and approved by the SAC.

The 2002/03 School Improvement Plan was reviewed and approved
by the SAC. In the course of discussing this year's plan, it was
decided to put together a status report at the end of each grading
period to indicate our progress toward meeting our goals. The SAC
will review the report and recommend changes in strategies if
needed. Middle school data is readily available. Ms. Jackson, Ms.
Ward and Ms. Porter will put together a form to capture the elementary
data.

It was asked whether or not our school zone might be expanded in the
future. Mr. Green indicated that the new construction would most likely
result in increasing our capacity by 150 students, but he did not think
the actual zone would increase in area. In the past, when the school
capacity has increased, more people have moved into the existing
zone. Mr. Green anticipates that will also be the trend when the
addition is completed.

Ms. Steverson asked about the 41 incidents of violence reported in the
data used to prepare this year's school improvement plan. Mr. Green
explained that one of the most serious incidents happened in the
community and because the individual was charged with a felony, it
resulted in a school expulsion. In addition, there were approximately
10 students suspended for substance abuse or possession. Also, a
few students were disciplined for having weapons on campus
(usually pocket knives - no firearms). Mr. Jackson pointed out that not
all of the incidents reported as acts of violence resulted in criminal
proceedings. Minor student fights, inappropriate student comments
which could be construed as sexual harassment and minor acts of
vandalism were dealt with at the school level without involvement of
law enforcement agencies. However, these activities fall into the
category of violent incidents as reported by the district. It was noted
that for our population 41 incidents, while a point of concern, was not
an alarmingly large number, especially in comparison with other
schools.

Our next major endeavor will be preparing the School Improvement
Budget.

This will take place at the next meeting on October 24th.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
