Ft. Braden School is proud to announce its first ever "Relay for Life" team, the Ft. Braden Fighters.
They will participate in the May 6 & 7 "Relay for Life" at the North Florida Fairgrounds. "Relay" is
an 18-hour walk where someone from our team is always walking the relay course. The purpose
of this event is to raise money for the American Cancer Society. During the month of April, we will
hold several money raising events at school to support our team in their efforts.
"Hat Days" - students may pay $1.00 to wear their hat at school
"Read-a-Thons" - students ask a sponsor to donate an hourly amount for each hour they
read
"Coins for Cancer" - a coin drive
*ALL the money raised during these events will benefit the American Cancer Society.

On April 22nd, Ft. Braden students will participate in a read-a-thon to raise money for the
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life! Our school staff has entered two teams in the relay, and
our own Abbey Hopkins is the child chair of the event. Although participation in the read-a-thon
is mandatory, fundraising is voluntary.

The read-a-thon is very similar to a walk-a-thon. Students will ask friends, family, and neighbors
to sponsor them for reading. We will challenge our students to read for the majority of the day!
We will have short breaks throughout the Read-a-thon. Each individual classroom will determine
the total time spent reading. The students may bring pillows, small blankets, etc. in order to be
comfortable.

Please collect cash and checks made payable to the "American Cancer Society" prior to the read-a-
thon, and have your child bring the money with them to school on April 22nd. We ask that you
encourage your child to get as many sponsors as possible. The class that raises the most money
(per student, on average) for charity will be rewarded with a popcorn party!

We see this read-a-thon as the perfect opportunity to exercise our brains, while serving our
community. Thank you for helping us with this worthwhile event!

Nutrition Tip of the Week:
Protect your heart:
Limit red meat, salt and fatty foods to keep your heart healthy and arteries clog free.

Physical Activity Tip of the Week:
Find the Fit: It's easy to fit physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see your
friends. Take a 10 minute activity break every hour while you read, do homework or watch TV.
Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30
minutes every day.
