CHOICE/REASSIGNMENT REMINDER
If you are considering choice/reassignment remember that ALL requests MUST be in by March 1st
to the Reassignment Office on Pensacola Street. This includes choice/reassignments for sibling
support and for grandfathering. Remember sibling support applies to a younger child who already
has an older sibling reassigned to Canopy Oaks and grandfathering applies to students who are
presently in 3rd or 4th grade and would like to finish their last 1 or 2 years at Canopy Oaks but
are moving into another school zone in Leon County.

CONGRATULATIONS MRS. GORACKE
& MRS. MALONE!!!
Superintendent Jackie Pons is pleased to announce the Leon County Schools top five Teacher of
the Year (TOY) finalist and the School Related Employee of the Year finalist. Fifty-two schools
chose one teacher and one support staff for their campus and that winner advanced to the District
competition.
Susan Goracke was one of the top five teachers! Tracy Malone was one of the top five school
related employees!
The finalists were chosen by panels of judges that included past top five winners, principals, and
community members. We are so proud of Mrs. Goracke and Mrs. Malone along with all of our
teachers and support staff!

Principal's Message
As the FCAT and SAT/10 fast approach, this is a reminder to first through fifth grade parents that
the students' scores on these tests are included in the criteria for promotion to the next grade
level. Although parents received information regarding promotion criteria at the beginning of the
year, it is important that you stay in close contact with your child's teacher regarding the progress
your child is making towards meeting the requirements of his/her grade level.
In addition the state of Florida has mandated that all third graders make a minimum score of 2 (on
a scale of 1-5) in the area of reading in order to be promoted to fourth grade. We want to assure
parents that students have been receiving instruction all year on grade level benchmarks and
should be well prepared for the formal testing situations. We appreciate the continued support we
receive from parents!!
We have worked hard all year to be sure our students are prepared for the tests. We are counting
on parents help to make sure that they get a good nights sleep the night before the test, get a
good breakfast on the morning of the test, and get to school (or the bus stop) on time. As a team,
we will show that Canopy Oaks students can shine!

Last call for yearbooks! The last day to order a yearbook will be March 2nd. Books are $15.00
and checks can be made payable to Canopy Oaks.

Past FCAT tests have been released by the Florida Dept. of Education to help parents and students
better understand the types of questions asked on the tests. These tests may be downloaded at:

REGULAR ATTENDANCE
CAN RAISE TEST SCORES
It seems obvious when we read that kids need to be in school to learn. But research shows just
how important it is to have good attendance. On state tests, children who were in school most did
the best. Children who came to school 93 percent of the time outscored everyone else. When
children missed even a few more days, their scores went down.

Cafeteria -- Parents Lunch With Children
Please remember that one of our rules is that "We do not share food." This is for the health and
safety of all children. Many children have allergies and severe allergic reactions. (peanuts, milk,
wheat, etc.)
As a parent, if you bring food for the class, please coordinate this with the classroom teacher. If
you bring food for more than your child, you must coordinate this with the child's parents and
have their permission. Our
teachers and parents know the health concerns of their individual child/ren.
We respectfully request that food brought for one class not be shared with students in other
classes.

February is Black History Month! Ask your child what type of activities they are doing in order to
learn more and celebrate black history and heritage.

Kindergarten registration is approaching fast. Registration at Canopy Oaks will be the first two
weeks of May. The following are kindergarten requirements for registration:
_ Child must turn 5 years old by 9/1/07.
_ Proof of a physical within the past year.
_ Shot records (the blue card).
_ Original birth certificate (the one without the footprints on it).
_ 2 proofs of address (Check with front office to find out what is acceptable).
If you have any questions, please call Janet Allen at Canopy Oaks (488-3301).

Progress Alerts
We are nearly halfway through the third grading period, which means that progress alerts were
sent home on FEBRUARY 8th. You may have received a progress alert for your child. Remember,
progress alerts are our way of helping you to get the children caught up and back on track before
report card grades come out. If you have questions or concerns about your child's progress -
whether you get a report or not - please feel free to call your child's teacher or schedule a
conference. Your parental support is the key to the success at Canopy Oaks!

Art Day is March 15th at Canopy Oaks. If you can volunteer to help, please call Mrs. Anderson at
488-3301.

Nutrition Tip of the Week
Friendly Heart Foods: Eat more fish!
Omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, tuna and herring help prevent
blood clots from forming and reduce the risk of heart disease.

All wrapped up: The latest craze is the wrap--everything is wrapped in tortillas, tacos, pitas and
pastry shells. But how healthful are these new sandwiches? Wraps can provide a quick meal, but
often provide the calories of two. Wraps can have from 400 to 1500 calories, depending on the
size and the filling so before you jump on the bandwagon, checks out the wrap. Make your own
wrap to control calories, fat, sodium and size. Load wraps with fresh veggies, a moderate amount
of lean meat and use sauces or dressings sparingly.

Physical Activity of the Week
Eat Right and Get Some Sleep: Along with good nutrition and regular physical activity, adequate
rest is a big part of any formula for fitness and health. When you get a good night's sleep, you
feel better and are maximizing brain function and energy levels.

Remember your body’s “spring training” fuel needs: Include plenty of carbohydrates to fuel your
muscles. Smart choices include whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables and beans. Eat carbohydrates
throughout the day, before and after workouts and training sessions. Include protein from lean
sources like meat, fish, poultry, beans and dairy foods and a moderate amount of fat. Finally,
remember to stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and water-based beverages
throughout the day. As your activity level increases, remember to increase fluids too.
