Principal’s Message
Thank you so much for being involved in your child’s education. I encourage you to read your
teacher’s newsletters and to go over with your child work that comes home. Also, please
encourage your child to read every day. Children, who read often, become better readers.

Please remember that our PTO is meeting Monday night. I look forward to seeing many of you at
our meeting. Thank you so much for participating in the fall fundraiser sponsored by our PTO.

District Advisory Council
Many thanks to our parents who have agreed to serve as our representatives on the District
Advisory Council this year: Melode Smelko and Barb Brown, with Ken Hawkins as our alternate.
We appreciate their commitment to the school!

Professional Performance: Did you watch the Olympics? You may not be a professional athlete
(yet), but you can eat like an “all star.” Athletes know that they need to make eating choices that
help them perform at their best. To help you get the most out of your body, eat a wide variety of
foods including lean meats and low-fat dairy products and exercise every day.

Security Cameras
If you have been on the Canopy Oaks campus lately, you may have noticed the new security
cameras that have been installed. These will enable us to see what is happening on our campus at
all times and assist us as we continue to keep our school safe.

Tardy Policy
Daily attendance and being on time for school are critically important to a child’s success in
school. Students arriving after 8:05 a.m. must have a parent sign him/her in through the front
office or have a written excuse for being tardy. Without a parent signing him/her in or a note, the
tardy will be unexcused. School Board policy and Florida law requires that parents be held
responsible if their child is chronically late for school. The law allows excused tardies for illness
or medical care (of the child), death in the family, religious holidays, prearranged tardies for
educational purposes approved by the principal or assistant principal. If the child is going to a
dentist or doctor appointment, a note from that office will be required. Note, oversleeping, car
trouble, traffic, power outage, or a parent not feeling well are not excused tardies.

Volunteer for the month of October
Wendy Stinson
Wendy headed up our Fall Fundraiser. Congratulations! Enjoy your parking space for the month
and lunch from Tropical Smoothie.
**Don’t forget to send in your green volunteer sheets.**

Absences for Student/Family Trips
Students who are absent for an "educationally valuable experience" other than a field trip or school
sponsored function or activity may receive an excused absence if the following criteria are met:
 1. A written request, identifying the educational benefits, must be submitted by the parent/
guardian.
2. The absence must be pre-approved at least one week in advance by the principal or
attendance administrator.
3. Students are responsible for work missed during this absence. See item (9) of this policy

ITEM 9 of Policy
(9) Makeup Work. Students who have been absent and are excused are given the privilege of
making up work. The length of time within which work may be made up shall be determined by
the extent and nature of the absence. It is the student's responsibility to obtain and complete all
makeup work.

2006-2007 Yearbooks
We still have a few yearbooks left from last year. If you didn’t get a chance to purchase one but
would like to, please come the front office. The cost is $15 per book. Checks can be made
payable to Canopy Oaks.

Crossing Areas and Your Safety
Canopy Oaks has adults out front at the crosswalk areas in the drop off/pick up area to help
parents and students cross in both directions. Please do not walk across until one of our
employees gives you the go ahead. Even if you are an adult, please wait until the traffic is stopped
and one of our employees has held up the large stop sign to ensure safety. Also remember that
children are not allowed to cross the drive thru by themselves. They must have an adult with
them.

Nutrition Tips
Start the day with a healthy breakfast.
The key to a healthy breakfast is including plenty of nutrients that your body can use to jumpstart
the day. A breakfast with protein, carbohydrate and rich in fiber can keep you energetic until
lunch. A good example is peanut butter on whole-wheat toast, whole grain cereal with low-fat
yogurt or milk, or mixed nuts and dried fruit.

Physical Activity Tips
Don't overdo it. Do low - to moderate-level activities, especially at first. You can slowly increase
the duration and intensity of your activities as you become more fit. Over time, work up to
exercising on most days of the week for 30-60 minutes.

Strength Training: Unlike aerobic exercise that burns calories primarily during the exercise
session itself, strength training boosts your metabolism throughout the entire day and night.
Muscle tissue actively burns calories. The greater your muscle mass, the more calories you burn.
