Principal's Message
This school year has passed so quickly! There are 5 weeks of school left and we still have so
much to accomplish.

Our teachers continue to work hard to help children master grade level benchmarks in order for
them to be promoted. Our PTO is planning a great week of activities for Teacher Appreciation
Week, which is, May 2nd - 6th. The School Advisory Council will meet on Monday, May 9th and is
in the process of reviewing current test data; writing the School Improvement Plan for next year;
and evaluating progress made this year. We are looking forward to our celebrations for
accomplishments with our Accelerated Reader program, end of the year awards assemblies, fifth
grade celebration, and throughout May the registration of new cardinals for Kindergarten next
year.

Kindergarten Orientation is scheduled on May 12th at 9:00 am with a tour of our Kindergarten
classrooms and lunch in the school cafeteria. Student lunch is $1.50 and adult lunch is $2.50. At
6:00 p.m. there will be a meeting in the school cafeteria for parents of registered Kindergarten
students. If you have a child who will be entering Kindergarten in the fall, please plan to attend.
Registration packets are available in the front office. Please share this information with your
neighbors and friends.

Please remember that May 27th is an early release day. School will be dismissed at 11:40 a.m.
Students enrolled in the Extended Day Enrichment Program will begin their day in after school at
11:40 a.m. All of our students will have lunch before they leave campus on this day.

Thank You!
Our students, families, and friends had a grand time at the Cardinal Carnival! What wonderful
baskets at the silent auction! Without expenses paid $12,626.00 was received. A BIG thank you
goes out to our "Carnie Crew", PTO, parents, and faculty who helped with the Cardinal Carnival!
With everyone's help, it was a big success!!!

A BIG Thank You
The "Carnie Crew" would like to say thank you to everyone who helped with the carnival. People
volunteered to bake items for the cake walk, help with the silent auction, pick up items that were
needed, set up and clean up, and much more. Everyone worked hard and the carnival was a big
success. From the silent auction alone, over $6000.00 was raised for COE. A lot of hard work was
put into each basket by parents and they looked great.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is May 3rd - May 7th
We are getting ready for Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week! This is everyone's opportunity to show
all of our teachers and staff members how much we appreciate them. The school volunteers and
PTO are hosting the following schedule. If you would like to join in, you are welcome to do so!
This year's schedule is:
Monday, May 2nd - Love Notes
Tuesday, May 3rd - Sweets Day
Wednesday, May 4th - Coffee Café
Thursday, May 5th - Pampered Day
     Friday, May 6th - Cookout/Car Wash
We truly love our teachers and staff members at Canopy Oaks!

Nutrition Tip of the Week:
Make fast food healthier: Order tacos or burritos with salsa and skip the cheese. Top pizzas with
chicken or Canadian bacon with lots of vegetables. Ask for a grilled chicken sandwich served on
a baguette. Have water or skim milk instead of a soft drink. You can also order smaller-sized
burgers, share fries with a friend and substitute a salad for French fries - all good ways to make
quick-serve meals healthier.

Physical Activity Tip of the Week:
Crunch in Bed
Before you even get out of bed in the morning, do 10 stomach crunches while lying flat on your
mattress. Increase daily by one until you get up to 100. Think you'll never get there? Try it. You
may eventually have to set your clock to wake up 15 minutes earlier, a small price to pay for a
flatter stomach.
