Dear Parent/Guardian,

Cobb Middle School has noted a recent increase in the incidence of
gastrointestinal illnesses or gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis is commonly
caused by viruses and most cases are not serious. Nearly all cases of
gastroenteritis are self-limited and often resolve without specific
treatment in one to two days. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
and low-grade fever.

If you experience ANY of these symptoms:

• Drink plenty of fluids such as juice or water to prevent
dehydration.
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine as these may worsen dehydration.
• Wash hands often, especially if someone in the household is sick.
Wash hands thoroughly after toileting and before food preparation or
eating.
• Clean household surfaces with a bleach-based cleaning solution;
particularly in the kitchen and bathroom.
• Seek medical care if the symptoms do not resolve in a few days or
if there is bloody stool or a persistent high fever.

To help prevent spread:

Please do not send your child to school if he/she has nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea or fever. Your child should not return to school until there has
been no diarrhea for 24 hours. In extreme cases, people may remain
contagious for days to weeks after an episode of gastroenteritis.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school at 488-
3364.

Remember: Continue good hand-washing even when feeling better. Wash your
hands! Wash your hands! Wash your hands!

Sincerely,

Shelly L. Bell
Principal
