“Building the Future Together”

Dear Parents and Students,
It is difficult to believe that we are almost half way through the last
nine weeks of the 2003-2004 school year. We have had a wonderful school
year and I would like to thank each and every one of you for sending us
your precious children. We have enjoyed working with you and your families
to insure all of our young people get the best education possible.
Speaking of education and making it better for all of us; our School
Improvement Plan (SIP) Input Day will take place on Thursday, April 22nd
from 12:00 until 2:30 p.m. You can email, fax, write, call or stop by the
conference room to give us any input you might have for next year. Our
School Improvement Plan is monitored by our SITE (School Improvement
Committee, comprised of teachers, staff, principal and parents) and our SAC
(School Advisory Council, comprised of parents, partners, teachers, and
staff). We would love to have any input you would like to give us. You
can view our current SIP on our web page.
Our Girls Golf Team consisting of four young ladies did very well last
Monday. The team members are Sandra O’Campo, Haleigh Johnson, Arielle
O’Hara and Sarah Covan. We are very proud of them and Coach Witters!!
More Sports News: Girls Softball and Track are still taking place. Please
get out there and support our teams!!
Friday, April 16th, the following Beta members were treated to lunch in
style! These students maintained a 3.75 grade average, exceeded in
citizenship and did over 20 community hours. To congratulate them for
being one of the top Beta clubs in our area and being recognized from the
National Organization they were picked up at Cobb and taken to Olive Garden
in the stretch Hummer limo! (Go Ms. Roser, for making it happen)! Many
thanks to all these students and the rest of Beta for their HARD work this
year. They were absolutely an amazing group to work with. Ms. Drew and I
had the best time with each and every one of them! Tiffany Branch, Chasen
Brokaw, Aaron Brown, Taylor Brown, Brandon Davis, Meagan Davis, Michael
Duckett, Julia Guyton, Maggie Hodges, Rachel kuhne, Josh McLawhorn, Neeti
Pradeep, Melanie Rausch, David Rodriguez, Bridget Swingle, Mary Beth
Waddill, Brittany Wood, Carol Ye, Brittany Young.
Mrs. Stephanie Harrell and Ms. Teena Ketchum were selected to attend the
Florida Inclusion Network Summer Institute. They will spend a week
learning strategies to help students comprehend and learning how to
incorporate different activities into an inclusion type setting. We are so
proud of both of you.
Academic News: Progress Reports go home on Wednesday, April 21. The
end of the year is fast approaching so these reports are very important.
Mrs. Susan Harris, Language Arts teacher, has been nominated for
inclusion in the 2004 Who’s Who Among American Teachers. A former Cobb
student recommended Mrs. Harris for this honor. Congratulations!!
Congratulations to Alejandra Castillo, 8th grade, for being a first
place winner in the poetry contest sponsored by the Gamma Tau chapter of
Lambda Iota Tau from FSU. Lambda Iota Tau is an international honor
society for students of literature. Alejandra and the other winners from
Deerlake, Wakulla, and Griffin Middle Schools were honored on Thursday,
April 15th, in the Williams Building on FSU campus. Here is Alejandra’s
winning entry.

“Woman’s Path”
A woman’s life contains the hours of the day
That brings you down to your knees
The pain, the love, and the life they lead
The teenage girl, the grown woman, the grandmother
The work to go through as you get older
The pain of childbirth, the tears of divorce
The day of their wedding, the eyes of their beloved
The smoothness of their skin, the smell of their hair
Like a flame blown by a fire
Their life perceives love and desire
Some years they feel happiness, others regret
They know their path and their lives’ concepts
Their love is blind, their strength knows no fear
Their teen years are complicated
By the voices they hear
They need comfort; they need a mate
They need dignity; they need fate
A woman’s life is the center of the world
The plot of a movie
The meaning of life, the conclusion of a story
They discovered the plot of life, the cost of love
And one day
They’ll discover the world up above.

Please check the calendar on the back for lots of important dates that
are fast approaching.
As always, thank for your support!!

Sincerely,

Lynda Roser

                   NOTE OF CONCERN
Summer is fast-approaching and many of our students will have lots of time
alone. To assist in making that time safe, happy and productive, the Cobb
PTO offers the following suggestions (courtesy of Positive Promotions):
10 WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD MAKE WISE DECISIONS
1) Give your child the opportunity to make choices about food, clothes and
other non-critical areas, even when it's easier to simply issue a command.
2) Ask for your child's opinion about what should be done in various
situations.
3) Let your child be the one to decide if more practice on a task or skill
is needed before trying something harder.
4) Permit your child to decide how to solve problems, even though you
would find it quicker to provide a solution. Explore together the possible
consequences if certain choices are made.
5) Let your child offer concrete evidence to show a readiness for new
privileges or responsibilities.
6) When conflicts arise, request that your child take some responsibility
for resolving them in a way that will work for all involved.
7) If your child is angry, have him or her cool down rather than make a
rash decision.
8) Give your child the space to make poor (but not life-threatening)
decision. Children and teens, like us all, often learn from mistakes.
9) Offer your support and understanding when your child makes mistakes in
judgment. Then discipline as needed.
10) Acknowledge your child's good decisions. Point them out when made and
refer to them when future decisions are required.
Remember: Wise decision-making comes from practice and encouragement.
