Mu Alpha Theta is a high school math organization that sponsors contests
around Florida during January, February, and March. Cobb participates in
the Algebra I and Geometry divisions. All Algebra and geometry students are
eligible. On Saturday, January 10th, Cobb students traveled to Fort Walton
Beach for a math contest at Choctaw High School. This contest was for
Middle Schools and High Schools from all over North-West Florida. There
were 40 teams at the competition from 25 schools. About 700 students

McLawhorn, Carilyn Powers, and Bernadette Quijano placed 23rd. Ryan Coker
was our high individual scorer.
In Algebra I, the team of Brandon Davis, Michael Duckett, Graham Hawkes,
and Huong Le finished in 5th place and received a trophy. Brandon, Michael,
Graham, and Huong also all finished in the top 20 as individuals out of
almost 200 Algebra students who competed. Michael received a trophy for
finishing 10th. Congratulations to all the students who went. Great job! We
appreciate you and we appreciate Mrs. Harrell and Mr. Coleman for leading
the charge. All Algebra and Geometry students are invited to participate in
the next Mu Alpha Theta contests. There will be an invitational on January
24th in Vero Beach and a regional on February 7th. See Mr. Coleman in room

Earlier this year I informed you about a few teachers who are out of
field. I have one additional teacher to advise you about for second
semester of this school year. Ms. Diane Kendall is teaching one class of
science and does not hold certification in this area. We consider her to
be highly qualified. Also, please help me in welcoming Ms. Candice Mays to
our Math Department, Ms. Angela Davis to our Language Arts Department and
to Ms. Jenny Beyer as our new Media Specialist.
Lots of exciting events are taking place at Cobb. Boy’s basketball and
girl’s soccer have just gotten started. Our next School Dance will be on
January 22nd after school. The boy’s basketball team defeated BelleVue last
night, 46-44. What a great game. Parents and students please come out and
support your team. Home and away games end no later than 8:00 P.M. and in
most situations, we have school the following day. PARENTS please make
plans to have your child picked up between 7:45-8:00. The team and
sponsors appreciate your support in making sure that students are picked up
on time. Our next SAC meeting is at noon on January 27. Our Magnet Open
House for Rising 5th graders will be held on January 28th. Our first ever
mini Mu Alpha-Theta will take place on Sat. January 31st. So many exciting
things happening…please get involved.

COUNTY MEMO TO PARENTS
Dear Parent or Guardian,
The peak of the cold and flu season is upon us. To prevent widespread flu
in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if
experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your
child to school, please consider the following guidelines.
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and
observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
-Very stuffy or runny nose and/or a cough
-Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
-Headache
-Mild stomach ache
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or
she has any of these symptoms:
-Fever (greater than 100 degrees by mouth and your child may return to
school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100
degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours)
-Vomiting (even once)
-Diarrhea
-Chills
-General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle
aches
-Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough
-Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
To help prevent the flu and other colds, teach your children good hygiene
habits:
-Wash hands frequently.
-Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth.
-Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw
it away and then wash hands.
-Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a
fever should remain at home until “fever free” for a minimum of 24 hours.
A child who has started antibiotics needs to be on the medication for 48
hours before considered non-contagious and able to return to school. Often
when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin),
it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding
whether or not to bring to school. Your child should be physically able to
participate in all school activities on return to school. Keeping a sick
child at home will help minimize the spread of infections and viruses in
the classroom.
Thank you in advance for helping make this year at School “X” as healthy as
possible.
