Dear Parent:
The following message comes from Linda Long - Miller, Leon County
School Nurse:
As part of the overall School Health Program, the 7th grade students
are given a scoliosis-screening test by nurses from the Leon County
Health Department. This is only a screening procedure to determine
which students need further evaluation. Our seventh grade students
will be screened for hearing, vision, and scoliosis on Monday,
September 16, 2002. Students will be released alphabetically on that
date and sent to the Cobb Media Center for the screenings. It is
important that your child be in attendance.
Scoliosis is a side-to-side curvature of the spine. When found early,
most scoliosis can be stopped from getting worse. The school nurse
will observe the student’s back while the student stands erect and
while bending forward. The nurses will look for level shoulders,
straight back, equal ribs and level hips.
For those students with possible signs of scoliosis, a letter will be
sent to the parents. The letter will ask the parent to take their child to
their own doctor.
If you have any questions, please call the Leon County Health
Department at 487-3186.
Thanks for your support.
Sincerely,
Lynda Roser
Principal
