COBB CUB REPORTER
SEPTEMBER 3, 2002

Greeting Parents and Students;
Welcome back to an exciting year at Cobb Middle School. We had a
terrific opening of school because everyone pitched in and helped.
The busses arrive on time in the morning, we have everyone on the
busses within ten minutes in the afternoon (trying to get to seven); the
cafeteria lines are moving, 7th and 8th grade citizenship honor roll
students are sitting outside, and the cafeteria is not too crowded;
students are bright, happy, learning and having fun; and the teachers
and staff are excited about the students and the new school year. So
far, so good. Thanks to everyone for all of their help.
Mark your calendar now for three very special dates:
 1. School Advisory Meeting (SAC) Sept. 4 12:30-1:30p.m.
 2. Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Sept. 5 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
 3. Open House Sept. 12 Thursday evening
Please plan to attend either SAC or PTO and get involved. We have
found that students continue to be successful if parents are involved.
Besides, we have a great time and get a lot done for the school.
Please come join us. Also, Open House is when you get a chance to
meet all of the teachers. You follow your child’s schedule and every
teacher goes over the class expectations and lets you know what you
can expect for the year. If you need to meet with teachers to talk about
your child, please call the guidance office and schedule a conference.
The staff will be happy to meet with you and together we can make
each child successful.
A special welcome to teachers who are new to us this year: Ms.
Latrina Singleton, Ms. Oliveri, and Mr. Walper. If you get a chance, stop
by and welcome them to the Cobb family.
Our dream of a Television Studio for Cobb has at last been realized by
the generosity of Mary and Bob Bedford, two extraordinary Cobb
parents. Broadcasting equipment is extremely expensive, and the
Bedford's have provided funds that were matched by Leon County
School District in the form of used equipment. Once all of the
equipment is installed and the District trains us, we will have a fully
operational studio. The educational benefits and potential are almost
limitless! We can now offer our students and teachers a marvelous,
creative opportunity to further the cause of literacy and continue our A+
academic excellence. To Bob and Mary Bedford, who helped make
this possible, we say THANK YOU.
NEW!!! The new Autodialer system has been installed. If your child is
absent from Cobb School Peer Counseling, an automated call system
will notify you with a recorded message stating that “Your child was
absent today”. Although you called to notify the school of your child’s
absence, the scanner will pick up the absence and call you between
5:30-9:00 p.m. Changes will be reflected after the attendance office
receives written explanation for the absence. It is important that the
school have the correct phone number to leave you a message.
Contact the school registrar for phone number or address updates.
NEW!!! Cobb now has a Listserv, a program that automatically
disseminates a single e-mail message simultaneously to a group of
people on a mailing list. There is no fee to join the listserv. It has been
set up to share information to parents from Cobb by e-mail, but isn’t
intended as a forum of dialogue between subscribers. To Subscribe
to Cobb’s parents’ listserv, go to the following internet address to view
the “List Archives at LISTSERV.LEON.K12.FL.US”.
http://listserv.leon.k12.fl.us/ Click on the “CMS-PARENTS” link and
then select “Join or leave the list (or change settings)”. In the next
window you will be asked for your e-mail address and name. Next,
click “Join CMS-PARENTS” and accept the other default settings.
Once you have signed-up to receive the mailing, you will receive a
confirmation request email THAT YOU MUST REPLY TO, to confirm
your identity and prevent third parties from subscribing you to a list
against your will. Simply wait for this message to arrive, then follow the
instructions to confirm the operation.
Special thanks go the following people: PTO- for all of their support,
help, kindness, and the new copying machines; to the Bedford’s for
their donations which will complete our video production studio; to Mr.
Lane, one of our parents, who has helped with parent pick-up traffic
every morning, to Donna Legare and Jodi Walthall of Native Nursery
for all of the pine straw; to the Department of Transportation for all of
the back to school supplies; to David Binder from the Department of
Transportation for his wonderful gift to a student; to Mrs. Bryant and
her children for laying all of the pine straw; to all of the staff who
helped with opening the school; to all of the students who have had a
great opening; and to all of the parents who have helped and
entrusted us with your children. Thank You.

Sincerely

Lynda Roser
Principal

NEWS FROM COBB PTO

Welcome Parents!!!!

I want to extend a warm welcome to all the new and returning parents
to another great school year at Cobb Middle School. This is going to
be an exciting and challenging year for our PTO. Shortly, you will be
receiving a packet for our Fall Fundraiser. It was very successful last
year and I hope that we do even better this year. Last year we
purchased a new copier for the school and the PTO is currently
fulfilling some wish lists the teachers submitted last year. We hope to
fulfill the remaining wish lists with what we raise this year. I would like
to see 100% participation in this endeavor, even if you purchase one
item – every little bit helps.

On September 12, we will have Open House. We are planning on
selling hot dogs, chips and a drink to help raise money for the PTO. It
is a great night to come out and meet your student’s teachers and
have a meal (another night you do not have to cook!!!).

We were very successful with our Spirit Sales during Orientation. If
you were unable to purchase our new T-shirt and other items, they will
be available during Open House.

I would like to extend a challenge to every parent at Cobb this year and
try to attend at least one PTO meeting throughout the year. We try to
hold meetings during the lunch hour and try to hold them to an hour,
we also hold several meetings at night. We have found we get more
participation during lunchtime, since we all have busy schedules
during the evening. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents
and get involved with the activities at Cobb.

I hope everyone is off to a great year and look forward to seeing you at
the PTO meetings.

Denise Anne Lasko
PTO President

REMINDER

OPEN HOUSE: The PTO will be serving dinner at Open House. Plan to
be there for hot dog, chips, and a drink for the low price of $2. Come
and eat, listen to fine music, and meet all of your child's new teachers.

FUNDRAISER: This year we are selling quality gift-wrap, accessories,
and delicious food items from Kathryn Beich, a division of Nestle. This
activity will provide funds for many academic and extracurricular
activities and events throughout the year. All participating students will
be eligible for prizes with the top and second best sellers receiving
$50 each! Packages and samples will be available at Open House
and every student will bring home a package on September 11.
Orders and payments are due no later than October 4.
