Let science help bring sizzle to your summer! Here are some fun tips:
--Listen to "Science Friday" on NPR every Friday afternoon. This week they
are reviewing good science-themed films that receive high marks from
science professionals and make recommendations for upcoming releases.
--Go on a botany scavenger hunt and try to find exotic/invasive plants in
your yard. Pull them out and replace them with a native plant that will
attract and support wildlife in your yard.
--Set up a backyard habitat and record the various types of wildlife that
come visiting. Consider frog huts, ladybug houses, watering and shade
spots for birds and butterflies; various bird feeders to accomodate
different shaped bills; liquid sugar feeders for hummingbirds.
--Monitor reports on nesting sea turtles this month. Volunteer for local
turtle watch groups.
--Visit the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge and learn about our wildlife and how
to spot them.
--Practice water conservation--especially in the current heat wave.
Investigate the many ways to conserve and protect our water supply.
--Go shelling. Take a field guide and try to identify the various types of
shells you find. Make a craft project using your shells.
--Spend some time watching the clouds--try to identify the types you see.
--Finish your summer science reading. Find a really good science-themed
book on your own to share with the class when you get back.
Have a great time and keep your eyes open and your observation skills sharp!
