Our community has been challenged by other cities throughout the nation to
recycle the most aluminum CANS from September 22-30. Tallahassee has
accepted this challenge, and now we are challenging you.
All Leon County elementary school PTOs are challenged to collect the most
cans and bring them to our CANpaign 2006 Rally on September 30 at Home
Depot on Capital Circle, NE from 9:00am-3:00pm. In return for your
CANtribution, we will pay $.40 per pound for your CANS ...and the school
that brings in the most CANS (by weight) will get double the money.
Our PTO president, Donna Lewis, is up for the challenge. You can bring
your aluminum cans to the Guidance hallway and put them in the marked trash
can. Let's see how many pounds of cans we can collect in 1 week.

Science News
The beginning of the year has been a busy one for our budding scientists at
Chaires. Kindergarten, First and Third Graders have started the year
focusing on Life Science, enjoying learning about the needs of living
things, and plant parts. The First and Third Graders have conducted plant
experiments, while the Kindergarteners are observing plant growth starting
from a seed.
Second Graders have been busy learning about weather, understanding how
vibrations cause sound, and using the scientific process to conduct
experiments.
Fourth Graders started the new year studying Earth Science, including the
weather and listening to guest speaker, local meteorologist Rob Nucatola,
who came out to speak specifically to them. Currently, the Fourth Graders
are studying rocks and minerals and did hands-on experiments to learn how
rocks are formed and how to test rocks using the Mohs Scale.
Fifth Graders have been extremely busy learning about Life Science,
including the classification process, cells, and the interactions of living
things. These industrious students are working hard to be prepared for the
FCAT Science test which will be administered in a few months.
Remember your child is studying science in his/her regular classroom, and
comes to the Science Lab once a week for hands-on activities. Your child's
report card grade will reflect his/her demonstration and mastery of the
science benchmarks in both of these areas. If you have any questions,
please email me at [log in to unmask] or call 878-8534.
