PRINCIPAL’S PAWSE
Wow! Did you see those report cards on Wednesday? I noticed that many of
our students worked extremely hard to bring up their behavior, work/study,
effort/participation and class grades! They really seem to be listening
carefully to the teacher and putting forth their best effort to get the
most out of their education. I hope that ALL students will either continue
to do their best or set a goal to work to the utmost of their ability as we
move through the school year.
Although our new report cards look very much the same, the computer program
to produce them is quite new and different to our faculty and staff! In
the past week and a half, all teachers received training and began
utilizing the brand new Student Information System for attendance and
report cards. (This is a fine example of your tax dollars at work! The
half-penny sales tax has paid for this long awaited and greatly needed
system as well as the training and support for implementation!) We are
working through a few “glitches,” but all-in-all, we are really excited
about the new program.
Special thanks go out to the parent volunteers who made it possible for us
to celebrate (and relieve stress) on report card day! We turned the media
center into an Italian “bistro” and provided the faculty and staff with an
extra long, relaxing catered lunch. Without the help of the PTO and parent
volunteers, it would not have been such a fabulous treat. We truly
appreciate you: Luz Elena Evelo, Donna Lewis, Beth Huettel, Cathie Burk,
Mary Beveridge, Sabrina Cole, Gina von Stein, Moetke Soule, Matea Burton,
Vicki Takach, Kathy Punausuia, Tracy Janicki, Staci Johns, and Julie
Sander!
MRS. MCCASKILL’S CORNER
Congratulations to two wonderful students who have been selected to
represent Chaires Elementary School at the 2005 Rev. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Commemorative Breakfast on Friday, January 14th. These students were
selected because the fifth grade team of teachers felt that each of them,
on a daily basis, represents what Dr. King taught regarding peace.
Danielle White- Mrs. Horne, Danielle’s fifth grade teacher, describes her
this way: Danielle is a super student with an outstanding attitude towards
school. She readily accepts responsibility and constantly tries her
hardest at all academic endeavors, where she maintains a top honor roll
average. She has strong morals and a work ethic that will serve her very
well in the future. Danielle is also involved in her church youth group,
she sings in the 5th grade chorus, and enjoys playing basketball. Danielle
displays daily, the values that Dr. King taught. She is hard working,
patient, kind to others and most of all, she constantly seeks to better
herself.
Donovan Spotsville- Mrs. Coleman, Donovan’s fifth grade teacher describes
him this way: On first glance, Donovan is a cute as a button with a nice
smile, but that doesn’t really tell you who he is. Donovan is a well-
rounded young man who is respected by his classmates. He is a hard worker
who has overcome obstacles with his positive attitude and persistence. He
is compassionate toward others. Donovan is a peacemaker and demonstrates
excellent sportsmanship during academic competition. He is frequently
requested by his peers to be on their “team” whether for academic or
athletic activities. Donovan has what it takes for a bright future: great
aspirations and super parental support.
THANKS TO CUB SCOUT TROOP 25
Mrs. Loney would like to thank Cub Scout Troop 25 for the beautiful flower
garden that they planted outside her classroom door. As many of you know,
Mrs. Loney has two sons serving in Iraq right now and many mornings she
doesn’t feel like smiling. Now when she looks at that beautiful flower
garden she can do nothing but smile. Words can not express how much this
means to her. Thanks for spreading such kindness and generosity.
FCAT BROCHURE
The Florida Department of Education is pleased to announce the posting of a
new web-based product called the About the FCAT Web Brochure. It provides

resources like the Sunshine State Standards web page. You may access the
English version of the brochure at
http://www.firn.edu/doe/sas/fcat/fcatpub1/htm. The Spanish version is
still under development and will be posted as soon as they are complete.
TSUNAMI DISASTER RELIEF FUND
In response to many requests, the Leon County School district is
participating in a district wide campaign to aide in the Tsunami Relief
drive. The campaign is called Leon’s Caring Schools. It will run from
January 10-24. Our goal is to raise $1.00 per student/adult employee.
Donations for this fund should be turned in to your child’s teacher. All
monies raised will be sent to our local Red Cross earmarked specifically
for the Tsunami Relief Fund.
