Welcome the start of the 2003-2004 school year!  I hope you all had a
chance to attend orientation yesterday and meet your child's teacher.  Our
theme this year is "Building the Future Together" and we need YOUR help to
make it happen!  If you haven't had a chance to sign up to help your
child's teacher or the PTO with a special function, just reply to this
email and I'll be glad to make sure we have a volunteer opportunity for
you.

I do want to take this opportunity to share some exciting news with you.
This summer, Chaires was graded as an "A" school by the state of Florida.
In addition, under the federal government's No Child Left Behind Act
(NCLB), Chaires Elementary School made adequate yearly progress (AYP), as
well.  This is especially exciting because only 12% of the schools in
Florida and 22% of the schools in Leon County made AYP.  The measures in
the NCLB Act are similar to Florida's report card but in much greater
detail.  We can tell that you are working hard with your children at home
and I'm sure you can tell that we're working hard to continue to make
strides.  We have made some curriculum changes for the coming year that
will benefit all of our children!  We have added 64 new computers (and 30
refurbished computers) at the school so that your children will have access
to a technology rich learning environment.

Our first PTO Meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, August 19th will have to be
postponed.  We will be sure to advertise in the newsletter and via
listserve when we reschedule the meeting.

Please know that I have an open door and am willing to assist in any way
possible.  I'm looking forward to a terrific year!
