PRINCIPAL’S PAWS
Congratulations to Haley Simmons who represented Chaires at the district
spelling bee yesterday. She did a terrific job and came in third place!
Wow! I couldn't have spelled all of those tough words. I'm proud of the
hard work that all of the students are putting in. I know that many
students have set goals to earn an honor roll award during this grading
period! Parents, keep your eye out for progress alerts next week. If your
child is falling behind or needing assistance in a particular area
(academic, behavior or study skills), you may get a progress alert. This
is to let you know how to help your child improve BEFORE it goes on the
report card.

PROGRAM REMINDER
Mark you calendars for Thursday, February 12th to join us in celebrating
Black History Month. The Chorus will be performing “I’m Gona Let It Shine”
at 8:00am and 9:15am in the Cafeteria. Special seating will be available
for chorus parents. (Daytime performance only)

SPELLING BEE
Our annual Spelling Bee was held on January 16th. Haley Simmons was our
winner and Willie Watson is the runner up. Haley and Willie represented
Chaires at the Leon County Spelling Bee held at Leon High School.
Congratulations to you both!

STUDENT COUNCIL
February is the month of love and expressing to those around us how much we
appreciate them. Student Council would like to show our men and women who
are serving overseas in the armed forces how much we love and appreciate
them. We are asking each class to take a few minutes and make valentine
greetings for the men and women. They may be pictures, cards, poems, or
letters. We want them to know that they are loved and thought of during
this time of year. The cards should be completed by February 6th and
placed in the decorated Valentine box in the front office. We will deliver
the letters to Red Cross to be sent overseas. Thank you for showing your
appreciation to our heroes.

GUIDANCE NEWS
The Caring Tree of Big Bend Hospice will be sponsoring a grief camp. Camp
Woe-Be-Gone is a very special opportunity for grieving young people who
have experienced the loss of a loved one. The camp is scheduled for
Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Girl Scout Camp for All Seasons. For more
information call either Candace McNight or Pam Mezzina at 877-5310 or (800)
772-5862.

MS. HOPE’S CORNER
A word is emphasized each week (i.e. tolerance, empathy, etc.) at school
and students, from each class, are recognized who display that quality. The
word, for the district, for the next few months will be "testing."
Keys to the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) were sent home on
January 23, 2004 to answer questions parents might have about the test. If
you have not read this booklet, please take the time to do so.
FCAT Saturdays started January 24 and will continue through February 28 to
provide additional instructional help for students. On the 24th, there
were about 40 students in attendance. The teachers who have signed up for
the various Saturdays are to be commended for going the extra mile and the
parents, also, for getting the students here and picked up on time.

YEARBOOKS ON SALE
The cost is $15.00. Please make checks payable to Chaires Elementary.

FEFP STUDENT RIDERSHIP CARDS
Students are coming home with a green FEFP Ridership Card. Students need to
give this card to their bus driver anytime during the weeks of 1/26 – 2/6.
Even if your child does not normally ride the bus, we encourage them to
ride at least once during this 2-week period as it brings in funds to the
transportation dept.

PARKING PROBLEMS
We are still having problems with parents dropping off children in the
front of the school and driving off. If you are arriving late for school
make sure to walk your child to the office to sign in. When you need to
park to volunteer or walk your child to class, PLEASE park in front of the
Extended Day Portable on the grass or in the spaces marked
Volunteer/Visitor. Our teachers and staff have assigned spaces in the
front and back of the school.

MVP DISCOUNT CARD FUNDRAISER
Get out and sell those cards. The MVP cards sell for $10.00 each & we would
like each student to sell a minimum of 5. For every 5 cards sold, the
student will get to select a toy from the prize bag. For every 10 cards
sold, you will get to choose from the prize bag and win a game from Fun
Station. Top selling boy and girl will win a bicycle and top selling class
will win a pizza party with cookie dessert. SELL, SELL, SELL! Final
collection date for the prizes will be February 6th, 2004. Cards will be
available for sale all year long.
