PRINCIPAL’S PAWSE
It's been another exciting week at Chaires Elementary School. Luckily we
were spared any damage by Hurricane Katrina. We did get an opportunity to
practice our tornado watch and tornado warning procedures so that we are
ready in the event of severe weather in our area. Also as a result of
Hurricane Katrina, Open House has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September
13th starting at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. The Chaires Panther PTO will
be selling pizza dinners starting at 5:30 p.m. We will have introductions
of our faculty members, School Advisory Council, and PTO Board. After a
brief presentation, parents will have the opportunity to meet with
classroom teachers in order to learn more about the student performance
expectations and promotional requirements this school year! This is a time
for teachers to share general information with parents. If you need to
talk to the teacher about your child at length, please plan to sign up for
a conference. Please be sure to take a look at the "We need your help with
Parent Parking" flyer in your child's folder.

BUILDING RESPONSIBILITY
Kids hate to be told what to do. So they resist. To stop telling, nagging
and arguing, use a kitchen timer. When you want your child to do
something, set the timer. Then see if he/she can "beat the clock."
Say, "Let's see if you can pick up your toys before the timer goes off."
Or use the timer to enforce a time limit. "You have 15 minutes to get
ready for bed." You will be surprised how well this works.

SPECIAL THANKS
We would like to say THANK YOU to Ali's for providing ice cream coupons for
all our kindergarten students. Ali's is located on Crump Road, (behind
Maxwell's).

Open House has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 13th.
PTO will sell pizza dinners starting at 5:30 in the cafeteria.
6:00 General Meeting in the Cafeteria
6:15-7:00 Classroom visitation

SKATE NIGHT RESCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 6 FROM 6:30PM-8:30PM.

MCCASKILLS CORNER
We have had another good week. Keep it up! Our Kindergarten students are
taking their ESI-K (Early Screening Inventory for Kindergarten). The
DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) for K-5 with
initial sounds and letter naming portion only will start on September 12
and end September 23, 2005. Parents are asked to continue to check their
child’s school planner daily for homework, announcements, deadlines, etc.
Have a Wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

PINWHEELS FOR PEACE
In today¹s world, peace needs to become more than just a word. On
September 21, 2005, Chaires Elementary School of Tallahassee, Florida plans
to take part in an International art and literacy project, Pinwheels for
Peace by "planting" pinwheels with messages of peace at Chaires Elementary
School.
Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started by two Art
teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way
for students to express their feelings about what's going on in the world
and in their lives. Groups in over 400 locations throughout the world have
committed to spinning pinwheels on September 21st. This project is non-
political. Peace doesn't necessarily have to be associated with the
conflict of war; it can be related to violence/intolerance in our daily
lives, to peace of mind. To each of us, peace can take on a different
meaning, but, in the end, it all comes down to a simple definition: "a
state of calm and serenity, with no anxiety, the absence of violence,
freedom from conflict or disagreement among people or groups of people."
All of the students at Chaires Elementary School will create pinwheels,
pinwheels of all shapes and sizes ¬ as part of the creation process, the
students, will write their thoughts about "war and peace / tolerance/
living in harmony with others" on one side. On the other side, they will
draw, paint, collage, etc. to visually express their feelings. The students
will assemble these pinwheels and on International Day of Peace they
will "plant" their pinwheels on the fence around the school as a public
statement and art exhibit/installation. On September 21, 2005, keep a
lookout for the pinwheels. ¬ The spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will
spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the country and the
world!
We will need volunteers to help the classes place their pinwheels on the
fence. Each class will go out to place their pinwheels about 10 minutes
before their lunch hour. For more information, go to
http://www.pinwheelsforpeace.com or contact Jan Munn at 878-8534.
