PRINCIPAL’S PAWS
What a wonderful crowd we had for skate night! Coach wasn't able to race
on skates due to a preexisting injury. We're all hoping that Coach
Hawkins' knee injury will be better so that he can spend some time in the
dunk tank at the Spring Festival. We are looking forward to having an
EXCITING and FUN FILLED day of events on Saturday, April 17th. We will
start with our one mile fun run/walk. Our festival will include
entertainment, booths, exhibits, food, arts and crafts sales, and our
Silent Auction. If you haven't had a chance to sign up to volunteer some
time for your child's class booth, send in a 2 liter bottle of soda, or
send in items for your class theme basket, please be sure to do so. We
need YOUR help for this event to be a success!
You'll also want to note other exciting events coming up in the next few
weeks: Book Fair, Second Grade Program/Dinner, Science Fair, Take Your
Daughter/Son to Work Day (grades 3-5 only), Student Council Elections,
Fifth Grade Middle School Visitation, Fifth Grade Program, Hat Day,
Kindergarten Orientation, and more! Although this is a busy time of year,
our goal is for the children to truly enjoy their learning opportunities as
we complete the school year!

MS. HOPE’S CORNER
Special Olympics Leon County (SOLC) is a non-profit organization that is
working hard to improve the lives of many athletes with disabilities
through its year-round sports training and competition.
Please come and dine at Red Lobster on Friday, April 9th for dinner between
6:00pm and 9:00pm. The Sheriff’s department will have officers on duty to
serve you. Any tips they receive will be donated to the Special Olympics.
With your donation, more athletes in Leon County may have this opportunity
to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and share
their skills, talents and friendship with their families and the
community.

BE SUN SAFE
Looking our best is important for all of us. When we look good we feel
good. Unfortunately, many of us believe we look better with a suntan. The
bad news is that this way of thinking may cause one in five of us to
develop skin cancer at some point in our life. The good news is that the
vast majority of skin cancer types is entirely preventable. Leon County
Schools Health & Nursing Services suggests the following precautions to
prevent sun-related problems now and later in life.
· Wear sunglasses that block 99-100% of UV radiation.
· Wear a hat with a wide brim to protect your eyes, ears,
· face, and back of the neck
· Always use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
· Limit time in the sun during the midday hours. The sun’s UV rays
are strongest between 10AM and 4PM. Seek shade when possible during these
hours.

BOOK FAIR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Book Fair is next week and we need your help! If you can volunteer
between 8:30am-1:30pm, Monday through Friday or Tuesday night from 5:00pm-
7:00pm please contact Julie Sanders at 942-0312. We will also have a
volunteer sign up sheet in the front office. Hope to see you there!

PANTHER PROWL WALK/RUN
The Panther Prowl Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2004 at
9:00am. Pre-registration forms were sent home earlier this week and can be
turned in to your child’s teacher. The first 200 registrants will receive
a “goodie” package and t-shirt for the race.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION
All children attending kindergarten in August of 2004 and their parents are
invited to our Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at 8:00am
in the Cafeteria. We will have a short presentation from the schools’
administration, guidance counselor, PTO representative and a Kindergarten
teacher. The presentation will be followed by a guided tour of the
Kindergarten classrooms. This will be a good time for you and your child
to get a feel for what Kindergarten at Chaires is all about. Registration
packets will be available. We look forward to your visit!

SPRING FESTIVAL
The Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center will have a booth at
the festival and will be collecting donations. Here are a few items on
their wish list: empty shoeboxes, old kitchen or bath towels, beach
towels, canned or dry pet food, clay cat litter, new garden hose, standard-
size pillow cases, pet and baby shampoo, leashes, collars(new or used).
They will also take monetary donations. For every donation you will receive
one free ticket to use at the festival. Stop by to see the adorable pets
they have up for adoption.
