I wanted to give you a quick update regarding the bus fender bender at
Chaires today 9/25/06.

One of our buses that transports the kindergarten children from Little
Chaires to the main building for dismissal had already unloaded most of the
students when the driver decided to pull the bus forward before unloading
the rest of the children (as other buses were entering the loop behind
her).
The Red Bus Driver was unable to stop the bus even though she hit the
brakes. The red bus ran into the back of the green bus with the driver and
16 kindergarten students aboard.
As soon as the bus stopped, Mrs. Phares & Mrs. Fasthoff (teachers assisting
with K dismissal) immediately boarded the bus to check on the status of the
students.
Of the 16 students, only three indicated they were hurt. All injured
students were taken to the clinic and tended to by Penny Church (School
Health Assistant) who also contacted the parents.
The Emergency Medical Technicians also checked with ALL of the children and
in addition to the three that had minor injuries.
LCSB Transportation sent 2 substitute buses & drivers, 2 mechanics, and
Becky Temples (Connor Compound supervisor) to transport the drivers for
drug testing. Red & Green buses left the school late, but were able to
load and leave by about 2:15 p.m. (dismissal time is 1:50). The other
buses were towed from the school.

The Fire Department assisted with traffic, put down sand to soak up the
radiator fluid, and assisted with EMT’s for injuries.

Our DARE officer was on site and assisted. Deputy Revel (Lincoln’s SRO)
and Deputy Smelt from the LCSO assisted, as well. They took information for
a police report, took down all student information as well as witness
information.

All are safe and accounted for!
