PRINCIPAL’S PAWS
I would like to thank all of the children for their hard work and kind
spirit. I feel like we have had a marvelous year. It makes my heart swell
with pride knowing the accomplishments our children have made this year!
We will greatly miss this marvelous fifth grade class that is moving on to
middle school. We will anticipate the return of all of our kids in
August! Please have a safe and enjoyable summer and be sure to read, Read,
READ!

MS. HOPE’S CORNER
It has TRULY been a privilege and a delight to work with the wonderful
faculty, staff, parents and students at Chaires. While school is officially
out for most of the students on May 27th, the office will be open Mondays
through Thursdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed on Fridays. In
addition to summer camps and vacation, I would like to strongly encourage
students to read a good book (or two) over the summer. Summer will be over
before you realize it and school will be in session again. Have a great
summer with lots of sun, fun and relaxation. ENJOY the time off. Safety,
however, should be top priority.

Televised School Board Meetings
For the first time since 1981 Leon County Schools will be able to provide
the community with live television coverage of school board meetings. The

month at City Hall, and on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Aquilina
Howell Center Studio. All meetings start at 6:00 p.m. and will air on Leon
County Schools Educational Channel, Comcast Cable 23. Thanks to a
partnership with the City of Tallahassee, the first televised meeting from
City Hall will be broadcast on Tuesday June 8, 2004. Replays of each
board meeting will be aired on Comcast Cable 23 at 7:00 p.m. on the
Thursday and Saturday following the broadcast.

FALL ORIENTATION
It is early, but you may want to mark your calendar for Friday, August 13,
2004 from 12:30pm-2:00pm. This will be our Orientation Day for students to
meet their teachers for the upcoming school year. If you are not able to
come, you may call the office after 12:30pm that day to find out who your
child’s teacher will be. The first day of school will be Monday, August 16,
2004. The school hours will remain the same next year (7:30am – 1:50pm).
Our first bell rings at 7:25am and the tardy bell is at 7:30am.

Summer Reading Program
Join the Florida Library Youth Program (Flyp) for another summer of fun at
the Leroy Collins Leon County Public Library. Sign up for our Summer
Reading program at your favorite library, it’s easy, pick up a log and
start reading and keep track. Report in each week to your library for
prizes and to enjoy our special programs.

Reading tips from a Chaires Parent
Jacob and Jonah Goldstein-Greenwood were the top AR readers in their class
this year. Here are some tips from their mom, Carmy, that you may be able
to use with your own kids to get them to enjoy reading as much as they do.
Enjoy the time you have for reading. Read often yourself. Let your kids
know that you are anxious to get some time to read. Read to your kids,
even once they can read on their own. Share a snack as you sit around
together and read-get comfortable: laugh at the funny stuff: read the good
parts to each other. Reading doesn’t always mean sitting still and being
quiet. Be patient when your kids want to read something to you or tell you
about what they have read. When it’s time for some new books, treat your
trip to the library or bookstore like a trip to the toy store. Make time
for reading and other delights of childhood. Stash the TV and computer in
an out-of-the way place, not in the living room or the kid’s bedroom.
Limit television, computer, and video game time to 30 minutes a day. That
will give them time to play hard, to make neat stuff, and to use their
imagination.

MOVING THIS SUMMER?
If your child will be attending a different elementary school in August,
please be sure you stop by to fill out a withdrawal form so that the office
can prepare your child’s records to be transferred to the new school. If it
is not possible for you to come by the office, please call us at 878-8534.
