PRINCIPAL’S PAWSE
I'm very proud of our fifth grade honors chorus for their terrific
performance at Ruby Diamond Auditorium last Saturday evening. They did a
terrific job representing our school. I'm also proud of the fifth grade
chorus and fourth grade recorder group for their fine performances in their
spring performance on Tuesday this week. It's so exciting to see such
talented and well-rounded children at Chaires. Special thanks to Mrs.
Kilpatrick, special area teachers, and all of the volunteers who worked to
make the program a success. We enjoyed our first school-wide celebration
of "Pi Day" this week, as well. What a fun way to celebrate math! And
special thanks to all of the parent volunteers who helped to run the book
fair so our children could enjoying picking out their reading material for
spring break!
Remember, tomorrow is a teacher planning day! We hope that you will all
have a safe and enjoyable spring break. We'll see everyone back, bright
and early on Monday, March 27th.

McCASKILL'S CORNER
Parents, we have completed another year of FCAT testing. Our 1st and 2nd
graders were given the Practice Test of the SAT/10 this week and they
should bring the Practice Test home with them on today, Thursday, March 16,
2006. Please review the test with them. The SAT/10 test will be given
April 4-5. Make-ups will be given April 6-7, 2006. During the Spring
Break, continue to have your child read each day and practice the math
skills they have learned. We wish that our children have a safe and
enjoyable Spring Break and we look forward to seeing them back at school
ready to continue to learn. “Those who bring sunshine to the lives of
others cannot keep it from themselves.” Have a wonderful weekend and Spring
Break!

Guidance News
It is that time of year when kids begin to test and try to impress, not the
tests but other students through their words and actions. I've received
calls lately like this: My child decided to not be friends with another
child in their class because some of the other kids said, "we do not like
him/her."How can I teach my child to think for him/herself? My response is,
as the parent / guardian it is up to YOU to provide your child with the
tools (acceptance of self, a positive attitude, flexibility, courage, a
value system) needed to stand up for him/herself. It is most crucial that
this be done during the elementary years before he/she is faced later with
peer pressure about things such as drugs, alcohol and the like. Talk WITH
your child about choosing friends who share like interests and values. Be
sure that they understand what a friend is and what the responsibilities of
friendship involve. Kids often give in and do things because they want to
be liked. If your child has good friends, he/she will be less likely to go
along with the crowd. Also teach him/her that it is okay to walk away from
uncomfortable situations. They will be respected for it. It DOES NOT make
them a baby, a chicken or a wimp to do so. It shows that they are willing
to stand up for what they and their family believe. Talk with your children
as often as possible. LISTEN to what they are telling you. Ask them how
they would like for you to help them. There are many good books available
at bookstores as well as the public library to read about whatever your
special interest/ need may be. If you would like my help, please do not
hesitate to contact Carolyn Jones here at school (878 - 8534) or by e-mail
