Mrs. Jan Kilpatrick, our Music teacher, will be out again this week as she
grieves for the loss of her beloved husband, Kelly Kilpatrick who died on
Monday, August 9.

Coach Norton Hawkins, our PE teacher, had a stroke on Friday morning. When
he hadn't arrived at work by 8:00 we called and the Sheriff's office
dispatched EMT's to his home. Here is an update on his condition.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 2004
As you are aware, Norton Hawkins had a stroke on Friday morning. His
family believes that it occurred as he was preparing for work because he
was clean shaven and appeared to be in the progress of getting ready. Most
likely it happened between 6-6:30 a.m. and EMS arrived on scene at
approximately 8:15 a.m.

Coach is doing better than our last report on Friday afternoon. I spoke
with his son, Kerry, on Saturday morning. He said that they were still
awaiting the MRI. At last report, Coach had lost most of the use of his
right side (although he was able to move his foot and lower leg some on
Friday) and unable to speak. His blood pressure was very high, but in this
case, the doctor said that was a good thing. Because the pressure is so
high, it's keeping the blood flowing by the blockage. There is no swelling
or bleeding into the brain, although there was some swelling in the neck
area on Friday afternoon. Coach is conscious and responsive. Kerry
reported that he was even more responsive on Saturday.

When Connie, Matea & I stopped in to see Coach on Friday afternoon, I
believe he recognized us. When Connie mentioned that they wouldn't be able
to keep him there long, that he'd rather be up and working, he chuckled a
little and nodded his head. He also squeezed our hands with his left hand
as we talked with him.

He is in the Neuro ICU on the 4th floor at TMH surrounded by many loved
ones: his son, daughter-in-law, grand children, nephew, girlfriend, family
friend, and coworkers.

Our PTO has already begun planning a Walk-A-Thon to raise funds on his
behalf. Your support in this effort will be greatly appreciated.

I spoke with Coach's son Kerry. He said that Coach had too many visitors
Saturday, was somewhat frustrated that he couldn't talk, and his blood
pressure increased. So, be sure to check in with Kerry before visiting.

The MRI & CAT scans revealed that there is no bleeding in the brain and no
swelling, as well. Good news. Coach was able to swallow twice today,
although it hurt. The speech/language pathologist will be visiting him
Monday.
