PRINCIPAL’S PAWSE
It's been another productive week at Chaires Elementary. Thanks to all of
you who have donated items to the Joseph Family who just moved into their
own home on Saturday. We will continue to keep you posted if any other
needs arrive.
Special thanks parents who provide transportation for their children as we
work through time issues with the school clock. We have had the Leon County
Schools Maintenance Department come out and reset the master clock which in
turn resets all the clocks in the school. We have also synchronized our
school time clock where the employees clock in each morning. Now our
clocks should better match your clocks, so please watch for Ms. Stephens in
her yellow vest at 7 am when supervision begins.

Make Homework Meaningful
Every time kids sit down to do their homework, they ask the same
question: "Why do I have to learn this, anyway?" For some kids, the answer
can be simple. They know that they are learning skills that will help them
in the future. But other kids won't accept that answer. For these kids,
it helps to let them see a direct connection between what they're learning
in school and their lives right now. Here are some ideas:
Let your child teach you. Sometimes parents feel that they have to recite
everything they know when their child asks a question. Instead, ask your
child to tell you about it.
Put skills to work. Once your child has learned about decimals, have him
balance the family checkbook. Or have him figure out the batting averages
on his Little League team. Take him/her to the grocery store to compare
prices of their favorite foods.
Learn more about geography during breakfast. Where does your child's
morning cocoa come from? Check the label on the box. What countries are
mentioned in the morning news? Find them on a map.
Praise your child. Sometimes a child just needs to know that you are on
his/her side. Tell him/her you know it's hard work to memorize those times
tables, etc. But it's important, and you're proud of him/her for sticking
with it. Encouragement goes a long way when it comes to homework.

MCCASKILLS CORNER
The first nine weeks is almost over. We have had a great beginning of
school. Thank you parents for your continued support of your children and
Chaires Elementary. The DIBELS and ESI-K testing, for Kindergarteners, is
over and we will be getting results back soon. Just a reminder that our
car drop off time starts at 7:00 a.m. “As a team, we have the courage to
make amazing leaps.” Have a Great Weekend!

PICTURE DAY
We are sending home the order forms for individual pictures that will be
taken on Thursday, October 13th. Picture packets are pre-paid, so your
child needs to hand their envelope to the photographer at the time of the
sitting. Every child will have their picture taken as we use these photos
for the yearbook. Please make checks out to Leonard's.

TEACHER PLANNING DAY
The Chaires Extended Day Program will offer a Teacher Planning Day
fieldtrip to "Fun Station" on Friday, October 14, 2005 from 7:00am-
6:00pm. Registration forms will are available in the front office.
Register Soon!!! Only 65 students can attend. Call 922-2866 for more
information. Cost for the day is $27.00. Check or money order payable to
Leon County Schools. First come, first serve.

ART NEWS
Our 5th grade is starting a unit on advertising, icons and marketing. We
need your old magazines to study and collage. Any 5th grader who brings
magazines will receive extra credit. We will use the magazines for other
classes also. Please bring magazines to the art room or in my mailbox.
The art room needs a volunteer to put a metal "Art Cart" together. The cart
is in about 100 pieces in a box. This would be a great project for someone
to do at home or in their shop.

COOKIE DOUGH
Cookie Dough orders are due on October 10th. Please turn these in to your
child's teacher or to the front office. Your very last chance to turn in
orders will be Thursday the 13th. Make sure all monies collected are with
the order. The PTO will tally orders and send it off on Friday the 14th.
