PRINCIPAL¡¦S PAWS
What an incredible turn out for our first Chaires Panther PTO meeting.
Thank you so much to the parents who were able to attend. We look forward
to seeing our PTO continue to grow in numbers and in support of the mission
of our school. As our President pointed out, PTO backward is OTP which
stands for ¡§Over Time Parent.¡¨ Thanks to all of you who ¡§worked overtime¡¨
this week by coming to our first meeting. Did you know that our PTO worked
all summer long? They really did a fabulous job with beautification, Pre-K
and K-2 playground, curtains for classrooms, planning and more. Thank
you. We look forward to our best year yet . . . with YOUR help. As
always, if I can be of any assistance, don¡¦t hesitate to contact me by
phone at 878-8534 or email at [log in to unmask]

MRS. MCCASKILL¡¦S CORNER
I look forward to seeing all of you at Open House on Monday evening. Our
Open House is much earlier this year than in year¡¦s past. Our goal is to
let you know from the start of the year what the children are working on,
how they are being instructed, and what the promotion criteria are for the
children to progress to the next grade. Promotion standards have increased
in the area of writing this year. So, be sure to find out from your
child¡¦s teacher what you can be doing at home to assist your child. And,
if I can be of any assistance, please feel free to call me at 878-8534 or
you may contact me via email at [log in to unmask]

Join the Chaires List Serve
Thanks to all of the parents who are getting in the MANY start of the year
foms. We will be taking the email address(es) provided on the green office
card and adding you to the school listserve. The information that we send
out includes our school newsletter, PTO information, and sometimes last-
minute pleas for volunteer assistance. We will strive for this information
to be helpful to you and not more ¡§Spam¡¨ in your inbox!

Kindergarten, First and Third Grade Parents
Volunteers are desperately needed for the annual vision and hearing
screening of Kindergarten, First and Third Graders. The Health Department
will have nurses at the school on September 9, 2004. Volunteers are needed
to assist the nurses in screening the students. There is a need for at
least 6 adult volunteers at all times throughout the morning. If you can
donate an hour or two please contact Penny Church, at 878-8534 or sign up
in the clinic.

MORNING SUPERVISION
Morning supervision officially begins at 7:00 a.m. when the staff goes on
duty wearing our BRIGHT yellow ¡§Sponge Bob¡¨ vests. For your child¡¦s
safety, please be sure not to drop your child off prior to 7:00. Once you
see our bright bodies, you¡¦ll know that we are in place and ready to begin
taking over supervision of your child(ren). We are always looking for
additional assistance. If you are a parent who enjoys standing with your
child on the playground in the morning, and you are interested in helping
to supervise children, please be sure to fill out a volunteer form. Once
we receive clearance for volunteering, we¡¦ll loan you a bright yellow vest
and put you to work, too.

Special Areas Update
As you know, Mrs. Jan Kilpatrick¡¦s husband passed just prior to the start
of this school year. Mrs. Kilpatrick will be back on Monday. We would
like to thank Mrs. Burton for starting the school year serving as our music
substitute teacher!
In addition, Mr. Hawkins, better known as ¡§Coach¡¨ is in the hospital at
TMH. He is very ill, but is expected to have a full recovery from his
stroke. Your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes are greatly appreciated.
Stay tuned for more information on a Walk-a-Thon on Coach¡¦s behalf.

OPEN HOUSE DINNER
Come and join us for dinner before Open House from 6:00pm-7:00pm in the
cafeteria. Our Fifth grade will be serving a pizza supper. The cost for
each dinner is $1.50 for pizza and a drink.

Student Volunteer Opportunities
Responsible, reliable student volunteers needed to fill the clinic ice
bucket daily. Students must be able to do the task before the first bell
rings. Responsible, respectful, Third, Fourth, or Fifth Grade students are
needed to rise and lower the school flag daily. You must be willing to
learn the proper way to fold the American Flag. Must be able to raise and
lower the flag before the first bell in the morning and lower it in the
afternoon at dismissal. To apply for either position, please write a
paragraph or two about why you would like to volunteer and remember to
include your name grade, and teacher on the paper and then send it to the
office with the class attendance folder.

PARKING JOYS
We think we have it worked out! Special thanks to the parents and visitors
for their patience and to the faculty and staff for their flexibility. We
have shifted reserved spots at the front and back of the school in order to
open up many convenient spaces for parents. At the front of the school,
spaces 23-36 are available for parent parking. At the back of the school,
spaces 80-85 are open. We have put in a work order to our maintenance
department so that they can help us make the spaces more visible by
painting.
Please remember that our official parent drop off and pick up is located at
the back of the school. If, for some reason, you need to accompany your
child in to the school, you may use the open spaces to park and walk your
child in. For your child¡¦s safety - AT NO TIME should children be dropped
off at the front bus loop or from the front parking lot. We really
appreciate all parents following our drop off and pick up procedures. It
shows our children that rules apply to everyone. It also helps to maintain
a safe and orderly environment. If you have suggestions on how to improve
the speed, efficiency, or safety of our procedures, please contact the
principal.

PTO SPIRIT STORE
The PTO Spirit Store will be open every Thursday from

Good News At Chaires

Fifth Grade Dismissal Helpers
Mrs. Moss is so proud of all of the fifth grade students who volunteered
and helped with kindergarten dismissal during the first two weeks of the
school year. It was so nice to see older children escorting our youngest to
the buses. Not a single kindergarten student got ¡§lost,¡¨ ¡§misplaced,¡¨ or
missed a bus under their care. What a wonderful way to start the school
year!

Awards
This is the section of the newsletter where we regularly post student and
class accomplishments. Please be sure to ¡§stay tuned¡¨ for more good news!
We¡¦ve included below many of the incentives that we have for students.

Citizen¡¦s of the Week
One student from each class is honored each Friday as student of the week
based on the caring message and character trait emphasized on the morning
announcements. Names are announced on Friday¡¦s morning announcements and
students are given a pencil, ribbon and certificate from our Principal
Mrs. Moss.

Golden Spoon Award
We will have the ¡§Golden Spoon Award¡¨ for one class at each grade level at
the end of each month. This award goes to the class with the best
lunchroom behavior for the month. Work together as a table and as a class
so that you can win the Golden Spoon Award!

Spirit Stick Award
Each week we will take a count on Fridays to see which class has the most
school spirit. The following Monday, we will announce the winner of the
spirit stick on the Panther Pawse Morning Announcements. The class with
the spirit stick will have the honor of the spirit stick for the entire
week!

Honor Roll, Citizenship & Perfect Attendance Awards Assemblies
During the 2004-2005 school year, we will hold an assembly each 9-week
grading period to recognize students who are doing their best in each of
the following areas: academic work, citizenship, attendance, and effort.
