PRINCIPAL’S PAWSE
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at Open House on Monday! We’ll
start the evening with some brief school-wide information and introduction
of faculty, administration and PTO board members. Then you will have an
opportunity to visit your child’s teachers and see the wonderful work
they’ve been doing so far this school year. If you have a chance, please
come early! Fourth grade parents will be selling pizza and soda so your
family can sit and have dinner together. (Remember, Monday, September 22nd
is Family Day- A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children!)
You’ll be glad to know that we have planned a special “A” school
celebration for the students to coincide with Field Day on October 24th.
We’ll have a day full of fun, excitement, and celebration. Stay tuned to
the newsletter and/or web page for details and how YOU can get involved to
support the special events.

MRS. OLK’S CORNER
Applications are now being accepted for the Fall Induction of the
Tallahassee Area Coalition Center of Excellence (COE) and the National
Achievers Society (NAS). The NAS rewards academic excellent and cultural
accomplishment. Students inducted into this prestigious organization have
achieved significantly in their studies or have been recognized for
outstanding artistic or other cultural abilities. The mission of the Center
of Excellence is to assist in the development of a group achievement
modality for African American elementary/secondary and other historically
disadvantaged students. The NAS would like to communicate the idea that it
is all right to be smart. To be eligible for induction in the NAS, these
students must be in grades three (3) through eleven (11). Students must
have a minimum of two A’s and no C’s. A written essay (see application for
grade level topic) along with a $75.00 fee is required with each
application. Contact your child’s teacher for an application if you think
your child would qualify. Application deadline is October 10, 2003.

Open House
Our Open House will be on Monday, September 22nd from 6:00-7:00pm. We will
meet in the cafeteria for a short program. After the program you are
invited to visit your child’s classroom and meet their teacher. Our PTO
will be serving pizza dinners in the cafeteria from 5:00-6:00pm before the
program.

Attention: 4th Grade Parents
Want an opportunity to earn money for the St. Augustine trip? Help us sell
Pizza Dinners before Open House in the Cafeteria. All parents who assist
will split the profits and may place that money toward their child’s trip
or donate it to the St. Augustine Trip Fund. This fund is used for
students who might need assistance in paying for the trip. This is an easy
way to make sure your child can go (excluding referral, “N” on your report
card or behavior problems). We will stop the food sales as soon as the
Open House begins thus you will not miss your child’s Open House. We may
open the sales back up at 7:00pm if all pizza is not sold. Please sign up
with your child’s teacher if you think you can help.

Awesome Volunteers
Congratulations to Sabrina Cole who won the Publix Chicken Dinner this
month. During each PTO meeting we will draw the winning name of a
volunteer who has contributed at least 10 hours to Chaires.
Why Reporting Volunteer Hours is so important…
· Help Chaires earn the Golden School Award. We need to report a
significant number of hours to earn this honor.
· Each time you volunteer 10 hours, your name will be entered in the
drawing for a FREE Publix chicken dinner. Limited to one free dinner per
volunteer per year
· Earn your own golden name badge; volunteers who report 50 hours or
more will receive their own personal name badge. NICE!
· Best of all… you show your child that their school is important to
you.
Where to Report Volunteer Hours?
Each time you volunteer at the school be sure to record your hours in the
Volunteer Log in the Guidance Hallway (behind the office). You may also
take a Volunteer Hour Log sheet home to track hours you spend working on
projects from home such as grading papers, preparing baked goods, etc.

Parent/Child Therapy
The FSU Psychology Clinic is offering low cost groups for children (grades
3-5) and their parents. The groups are designed to help kids learn new
skills for better social functioning and to help parents learn how to most
effectively manage their children’s behavior. For more information call
644-3006 or go to the website:www.psy.fsu.edu/community/clinic/.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for these upcoming events!
