PRINCIPAL¡¦S PAWS
I think I spoke to soon in the last newsletter by starting with ¡§Wow! A
week without a hurricane.¡¨ I¡¦m proud to say that our word for the week was
very carefully chosen. We decided that to stay on track with our learning,
after missing three days to weather, we would ALL need to be FOCUSED! I¡¦m
proud of the children for working so hard with their teachers to get back
on track. (Can you believe that a second grade class has begun to watch
the weather and ask for their upcoming class work as homework for the
hurricane days? They don¡¦t like getting behind. I¡¦d say that¡¦s a FOCUSED
class!) As soon as we find out from the Florida Department of Education if
we will need to make up missed days, we will inform you via the newsletter.
I hope you take the opportunity to read through the additional note we¡¦ve
sent home this week. You¡¦ll find minutes from the September 21st PTO
meeting as well as a flyer for our ¡§A¡¨ School Celebration for students
which will be a cookout menu, ice cream all on Friday, October 22nd ¡V the
same day as Fall Field Day! All PTO meetings are open to every parent and
community member. The more people, the more ideas, the more fun, and the
better we can serve our Chaires Elementary family! Please plan to join us
for the October PTO Meeting . . . Tuesday, October 19th, 5:30 p.m., in the
Cafeteria. As always, childcare and homework passes will be provided!

MRS. MCCASKILL¡¦S CORNER
We would like to give a warm welcome to new faculty and staff members at
Chaires. Mrs. Janice Mozeko has joined us as a teacher in the ESE
department. Ms. Erin Lang will be serving as our P.E. teacher while Coach
Hawkins continues to recover from his stroke. And, in the front office, I
would like to welcome Mrs. Lula Walker. She will be assisting with
attendance, guidance, and many other things. Please welcome them and
introduce yourself when you¡¦re on campus again.

MORNING DROP OFF
We would like to remind parents that our morning supervision begins at
7:00a.m. For your child¡¦s safety, please be sure not to drop them off
prior to 7:00, as we do not have our staff and faculty members on duty
until 7:00a.m. When you see a staff member wearing a yellow vest it is
safe to drop off your child. Also, if you like to walk your child in to
class, please be sure to park in front of the school in spaces 23-36. We
need your help to keep everyone safe!

PICTURE DAY ORDER FORMS
We are sending home the order forms for individual pictures that will be
taken on October 13th and also Family Photo Night. Picture packets are pre-
paid, so your child needs to hand their envelope to the photographer at the
time of the sitting. Every child will have their picture taken as we use
these photos for the yearbook. Please make checks out to Leonard¡¦s.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Research shows that attendance is the single most important factor in
school success. Schools are responsible for teaching your child. But
schools can¡¦t do their job if your child is absent. Learning builds day by
day. A child who misses a day of school misses a day of learning, and
possibly building block skills needed later in the year!

EXTENDED DAY ACTIVITY DAY
Chaires Extended Day Enrichment Program presents ¡§A Day At Wild Adventures¡¨
on Friday, October 15, 2004 a teacher planning day. Sign up your child now
for this exciting trip. Registration forms were sent home this week.
Hurry!!!! Limited enrollment . . . only 65 students can attend. Call 922-
2866 for more information.

News From Art
The Art Class needs your recycling! Here is a list of items we can use all
through the year.
1. Egg cartons
2. Large yogurt, sour cream, and butter tubs with their lids.
3. Newspapers
4. Short sleeved Men's shirts. We have 10, but we still need 15 more. (We
do messy projects and we want to protect our clothing.)
5. Volunteers! Just one hour a week will help.
This week the first grade is making ceramic alligators to add to their
study of animals. The 2nd grade is studying Butterflies and creating a
multi media artwork using paint, oil pastels, and collage. Our 5th grade is
continuing to "Trade Spaces. All 3rd and 4th graders are continuing their
study of Ancient Greece and our Kindergartners are glazing their medallions.
