A Little Bit About School Advisory Councils in Florida . . .

The Florida statutes established School Advisory Councils at each of the
state's public schools. The councils must be representative of each
school's community and they must include parents, teachers, administrators,
business people, and other community members. A majority of the members of
each school advisory council must be persons who are not employed at the
school. These councils play an integral part in implementing Florida's
System of School Improvement and Accountability at the school level.

School Advisory Councils assist in developing school improvement plans
based on a needs assessment that addresses their school’s status in
relation to the state's goals. The plans, using local guidelines, are
submitted to the school board for approval. Lottery funds will be withheld
from any school district not having an approved plan for each of its
schools. The state's role is to set standards and measure results, while
the process used to achieve those results is a local decision.

In addition, school advisory councils are an integral part of the decision
as to how School Recognition money is spent. Since Chaires Elementary
School continued to maintain “A” school status, we will be receiving School
Recognition funds. It is especially important this school year that we
work together quickly on a plan for use of these funds. The funds can only
be used for the following: (a) Nonrecurring bonuses to the faculty and
staff; (b) Nonrecurring expenditures for educational equipment or materials
to assist in maintaining and improving student performance; or (c)
Temporary personnel for the school to assist in maintaining and improving
student performance. The funds can only be used for purposes previously
described as determined jointly by the school’s staff and school advisory
council. If school staff and the school advisory council cannot reach
agreement by NOVEMBER 1, the awards must be equally distributed to all
classroom teachers currently teaching in the school.
We need your help!

If you are interested in being a member of the Chaires Elementary School
Advisory Council, please complete and forward the bottom of this form to
[log in to unmask] Our first SAC meeting will be held on TUESDAY,
September 12th at 5:00 p.m. in the Media Center. Last year, we met on the
Monday evening prior to the District Advisory Council Meeting (held on the
first Thursday of each month.)

YOUR ATTENDANCE AT EACH MEETING IS IMPORTANT. In the past, we have elected
members that have returned this slip, yet they have failed to attend a
majority of the meetings. In order to be an effective council member, we
would like for you to only submit your slip if you can plan to attend at
least 80% of all scheduled meetings. We would like to apply for school
awards, but this is an area that we need to improve in order to be eligible
to do so.

Yes, I am interested in serving on the Chaires School Advisory Council as a

Please consider this a self-nomination and a commitment to attend at least
80% of all scheduled School Advisory Council meetings during the 2006-2007
school year.
