PRINCIPAL’S PAWSE
I know that we are all concerned for the safety and security of the
children at Chaires.  We greatly appreciate your help with the drop-off
situation by following school procedure and dropping car riders at the back
of the school!  This week we  participated in the American Red Cross Severe
Weather drill by practicing what we would do in case of a tornado watch and
warning. We’re ready for severe weather!
When meeting with a parent this week, she shared that there is very timely
safety information available to parents in the Leon County Sheriff's Office

MRS. OLK’S CORNER
Next week our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be working on an FCAT
practice test booklet. Look for the booklet to come home next week. It will
benefit your child to go over the items and format again at home with you.

TEACHER PLANNING DAY/ SPRING BREAK – NO SCHOOL
We have had quite a few calls about the dates for Spring Break. Spring
Break is March 24-28, and there is a Teacher Planning Day on Friday March
21st (the Friday before).

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
We would like to let you know that Kindergarten registration for the
upcoming school year (03/04) will begin the 1st week in May. Please pass
the word along to family and friends who may have kindergarten age
children. To pre-register your child, we need two proofs of residency
(something that pertains to the home, i.e. utility bill, phone bill, lease
agreement, mortgage bill) and the school registration packet filled out. To
complete the registration we will also need a copy of a certified birth
certificate, a current physical, immunization form and social security
number. All of the above is required before school entry will be permitted.
Students will begin the 2003-2004 school year on August 18, 2003. If you
have any questions, please call the office at 878-8534.

MARCH 1ST DEADLINE FOR REASSIGNMENT
March 1st is the deadline for reassignment approval for the 2003/2004
school year. If you would like to request reassignment to another school
for next year, please submit your request to the reassignment office by
this date. We have forms available in the front office.

SPRING FESTIVAL
Our annual festival will be held this Spring on Saturday, April 26th from
10:00am-2:00pm. Please mark your calendars and set aside this date for a
fun-filled day at Chaires!! Classroom parents will be contacting you to
help with decorating and manning the booths,  set-up and break-down, etc.
More details to follow in future newsletters.

SCIENCE SUPPLIES NEEDED
Ms. Koenig could use some potting soil and flower seed packages for a
planting project she will be doing with Grades K, 1 & 2. She could also use
come clear plastic cups (9 oz.) . If you are able to help her out with
this, it will be greatly appreciated.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Mrs. Davis’s Kindergarten class created a quilt in honor of Black History
Month with the help of Sonya Bement, parent of Casey Bement. Mrs. Bement
came to the classroom once or twice a week with her sewing machine and
worked with each child individually to create the beautiful quilt! The
quilt is on display in our Media Center. Please stop by and see it if you
have a chance. A BIG THANKS GOES OUT TO MRS. BEMENT AND HER “STICK TO IT”
ATTITUDE.

“KIDS TALK”
Bilal Hatim, a fifth grader in Mrs. Derrenberger’s class will be
representing Chaires Elementary on the Kids Talk show on Thursday, February
20, 2003, cable channel 23 to discuss the book Crossing Jordan . We are so
proud of Bilal! Next month they will be discussing the book Bud, Not Buddy.
Students may want to start reading this book now!
