The Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) legislation was signed into law by
Governor Jeb Bush on January 2, 2005. This law created and funded a 540-
hour program to prepare Florida four-year-olds for kindergarten. These
programs can be offered in public schools, by private providers, and even
in home child care programs.
The Leon County School District is making plans to offer a limited VPK
program for the 2005-06 school year as an addition to the high-quality PK
program already offered by the school district. This additional program
can be offered only if justified by sufficient enrollment. Providing
sufficient demand, the program will consist of a 3-hour session as funded
by the Legislature. Parents will be required to transport their children to
and from the school site.
In order to determine if the community is in need of the 145 slots the
school district could provide, the Leon County Schools Early Childhood
Programs in collaboration with The Early Learning Coalition Serving Gadsden
and Leon will be registering children to enroll in the four-year-old
voluntary prekindergarten (VPK) program for the 2005/2006 school year on a
first come, first serve basis.
To register, children must be four-years-old on or before September 1.
Parents must bring the child’s birth certificate and proof of residency in
Leon County during the registration times listed above.
Parents that have already contacted the Leon County Schools Early Childhood
Programs office to screen their child for the VPK / School Readiness
program do not need to reapply.
