PRINCIPAL’S PAWSE
I’ll bet you’re wondering why the newsletter is printed on RED paper
instead of our traditional lavender paper. Since next week is Red Ribbon
Week, we thought we’d be sure to let you know about the exciting activities
planned. Be sure to read all about the exciting activities that our
Student Council has planned for the children next week.
I would like to thank all of the volunteers and business partners who
contributed to our very successful Fall Field Day and “A” School
Celebration Cookout! I really think that all of the children had as much
fun as the parents who helped out! We couldn’t have done it without you.

OPEN AIRWAYS FOR SCHOOLS
The American Lung Association has selected Chaires Elementary to offer a
special program called “Open Airways for schools”. This is an asthma
education program for students in grades 3, 4 & 5. The students will
attend six 45 minute sessions, during the school day, that will cover
everything from triggers to proper inhaler use and the use of meters and
spacers. This is an excellent opportunity for asthmatic students to better
understand their condition and to learn that they are not alone. The
sessions will be fun, informative, and parents are welcome to attend with
their child. If you have an asthmatic 3rd, 4th or 5th grader, please
contact Penny Church, our school Health Assistant, at 878-8534. The
program begins in November and space is limited so call today to reserve a
spot.

RED RIBBON WEEK
We are starting our Red Ribbon Week activities on Monday to promote a Drug
Free America. Some of the activities will include, a door decorating
contest, a Candy Gram Sale and various dress up days throughout the week.
Here is a list of daily activities:
Monday-“Don’t let drugs sneak up on you”- wear mismatched sneakers.
Tuesday-“Stay on the right path…give drugs the ‘boot’!” wear boots to
school that day.
Wednesday-“Shade out drugs”- wear sunglasses to school.
Thursday-“Sock it to drugs” day- wear mismatch socks to school.
Friday- “Red Ribbon Spirit day” - wear something red to school.

your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday.

GUIDANCE NEWS
The Caring Tree Program of Big Bend Hospice is holding its Children and
Juniors night on October 28th for children ages 5-12 who have suffered a
loss of a loved one. For more information, contact Candace McKnight at

INFORMED FAMILIES
During Red Ribbon Week, Informed Families will host a series of events
directed at raising media awareness and its impact on youth attitudes
toward alcohol use. We encourage you to learn as much as you can about
youth attitudes toward alcohol use. By doing so, you will be better able
to guide children away from harming themselves. Please join us at a
statewide prevention tour event featuring Dr. Peter DeBenedittis, PhD.,
renowned expert and lecturer on the harmful effects of the media at Swift
Creek Middle School on October 28th, 6:30pm in the cafetorium.

CHERRYDALE FUNDRAISER
Many of you have been wondering when the first fundraiser (wrapping paper,
candy, etc.) will be delivered. At this time, we do not have a specific
date about delivery of this fundraiser, but plan to have both fundraisers
delivered before the Thanksgiving holiday. We will let you know as soon as
we know, so you can arrange pick-up.

UPCOMING EVENTS!
Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for these upcoming events!
Please note that the items with an X indicate that we will be seeking
