PRINCIPAL’S PAWSE
Welcome back! We're off to a wonderful start to the second semester at
Chaires Elementary School. Please help your child get adjusted by
maintaining a consistent bed time, going over homework assignments, and
reading daily with your child. We know that YOU are your child's first
teacher! Our second nine weeks report cards will come home on Wednesday
next week. Be sure to review your child's progress, making it a point to
carefully read the teacher comments. We will have our honor roll
assemblies next week, too! Check with your child's teacher to see if your
child will be receiving special honors for improvement, perfect attendance,
terrific behavior and/or academic excellence with great behavior.

IN MEMORY OF DR. PATTERSON
Please note that this issue of our school newsletter is dedicated to the
memory of Dr. Jeff Patterson, former Principal at Chaires Elementary
School. Dr. Patterson served as Principal at Chaires from 1987-2001. He
died on December 18,2005 after a 20 year fight with cancer. We will be
honoring his memory by accepting donations to the Chaires PTO in his
memory. Our PTO will work with those who knew Dr. Patterson well to
organize a project that will utilize the funds in a way that will honor his
memory well.

Jeff always preached, “Family First! Job Second!” A thought that I live by
everyday!
-Kathleen Murphy

I would just like to say he was a kind, understanding and compassionate
person, and one that loved Chaires Elementary School with all his heart.
He was truly an inspiration to me personally and professionally. His
strength and courage throughout his illness was truly admirable. He will
be missed by many.
-Betty Poppell

I'll always remember his kind and thoughtful ways of remembering details
about my family. He seemed to be truly interested in what they were up to
after they left Chaires Elementary. Jeff Patterson's faith was apparent in
his life and I'll miss his determined spirit.
-Kim Kennett

Among the many things we appreciated about Dr. Patterson, we will always be
most grateful for his support when we approached him about job-sharing in
1993. He was very understanding of our need to put family first. Job-
sharing was a great way for us to have the opportunity to teach, and to
spend time with our own children.
-Jane Goree and Jackie Bist

Dr. Patterson had so much school spirit that he offered an AR challenge to
the students one year. If the entire school met his goal he would kiss a
pig. The students met the challenge so Dr. Patterson kissed the pig
several times. Now that is spirit!
-Susan Fordham

Jeff always looked on the light side of situations. When I set off the fire
alarm with my microwave popcorn, he kept the burned bag on his desk for
years. We would laugh about it every time I went to his office.
-Melinda DeRouin

For the short time I worked with Dr. Patterson, I'll always remember that
he truly cared about his employees and their families. He treated everyone
equally and with the utmost of respect. Showing his school spirit was never
forgotten; you could always count on him to wear his "Chaires" t-shirt
Spirit Day. Faculty and students will remember seeing him go for his daily
run out on the field. Physical exercise was very important to him and he
was also an avid tennis player. He made his presence known in the
classrooms by his daily walk throughs. I think we'll all miss his kind
heart and his dedication to Chaires Elementary School.
-Linda Oslowski
When tomorrow starts without me ,and I'm not there to see ;If the sun
should rise and find your eyes,
all filled with tears for me; I wish so much you wouldn't cry, the way you
did today, while thinking of the many things, we didn't get to say. I know
how much you love me, as much as I love you, and each time that you think
of me, I know you'll miss me too; But when tomorrow starts without me,
please try to understand, that an Angel came and called my name, and took
me by the hand, and said my place was ready, in heaven far above, and that
I'd have to leave behind, all those I dearly love. But as I turned to walk
away, a tear fell from my eye, for all life, I'd always thought, I didn't
want to die. I had so much to live for, so much yet to do, it seemed almost
impossible, that I was leaving you. I thought of all the yesterdays, the
good ones and the bad, I thought of all the love we shared, and all the fun
we had. If I could relive yesterday, just even for awhile, I'd say goodbye
and kiss you and maybe see you smile. But then I fully realized, that this
could never be, for emptiness and memories, would take the place of me. And
when I thought of worldly things, I might miss come tomorrow, I thought of
you, and when I did, my heart was filled with sorrow. But when I walked
through heaven's gates, I felt so much at home. When God looked down and
smiled at me, from His great golden throne, He said, "This is eternity, and
all I've promised you". Today for life on earth is past, but here it starts
anew. I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last, and since each
day's the same day, there's no longing for the past. But you have been so
faithful, so trusting and so true. Though there were times you did some
things, you knew you shouldn't do. But you have been forgiven and now at
last you're free. So won't you take my hand and share my life with me? So
when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart, for every
time you think of me, I'm right here, in your heart.
-Marilyn Jackson-Rahming

McCASKILL'S CORNER
Welcome Back! I am very happy to see all of our students back and ready to
continue to learn. I would like to remind our parents that supervision
starts at 7:00 a.m. Students should not be dropped off in front of the
school and be allowed to walk to their classrooms alone before supervision
starts. We are looking forward to having a great 3rd nine weeks. “Enjoy
happiness; treasure joy.” Have a Wonderful Weekend.

Good News At Chaires

Art News from Mrs. Munn
January 9th is the kickoff for our 2nd annual fundraiser for the Art
program. This fundraiser is so easy that everyone can win the prize. All
you have to do is write the names and addresses of 7 out of town friends or
family members in your special book. Remember to write the names, addresses
and zip codes correctly, so they will count. These addresses will only be
used for a one-time mailing and will not become part of a mailing list.
(Last year I wrote my own address down as a test. I only received one
magazine offer, so you can assure your parents that it is true.)
For every 25 books that have at least 7 completed addresses, Chaires Art
department will receive $165. If everyone in the school filled out a book
we could earn $4800, WOW! On January 6th be sure to take your booklet home
and fill out those addresses.
This years prize is a really cool frog ring that lights up! I have enough
rings for everyone who fills out their book. If you or your parents have
any questions please call me at 878-8534.
