PRINCIPAL’S PAWSE
This school year is just zipping by! I hope that you will all plan to come
out to our Skate Night on Tuesday, February 1st from 6:30-8:30. Skate
World has been a terrific business partner with Chaires for the past four
years. While the children are out skating, it’s a great time to get to
know other parents. We also spend time planning for upcoming PTO events
like the first annual Walk for Your Heart Walk-A-Thon, Spring Fun Run and
Spring Festival. We need you there! While we’re busy planning and the
children are skating, we’re also earning funds for the PTO. We receive a
percentage of the proceeds for each child in attendance at skate
night . . . an easy fundraiser! Did you know that our December skate night
proceeds were donated and Skate World fed a needy family? Each child that
is recognized as Citizen of the Week gets a free skate pass! Also, the
class with the highest participation rate each semester wins a pizza party
and skate passes for the whole class! And, the school with the highest
participation all year gets two computers! That’s the kind of wonderful
business partners that we love to have at Chaires. Do you work for a
company that would like to become a business partner? If so, please
contact the school so we can continue to make Chaires a great place to
learn!
You may want to join us for a special event sponsored by the PTO! We will
be having an African Hand Drumming Assembly next Friday (February 4th) in
honor of Black History Month. Primary grades (PreK-2nd) will meet in the
cafeteria from 8:30-9:15 and intermediate grades will see the show from
9:30-10:15. Please feel free to stop by and enjoy the music and history
lesson. (Later in the month, on February 15th, our very own Fifth Grade
Chorus will be putting on a special Black History Month musical
performance, as well!)

MRS. MCCASKILL’S CORNER
The Keys to FCAT was given to students in grades 3-5 on Monday, January 24,
2005. Parents please review this very important information with your
children. The 4th grade students were given the Writing Plus Sample Test on
Tuesday, January 25, 2005. The Writing Plus Sample Test will be coming to
you very soon. We encourage you to review all of the FCAT information that
your child will be bringing home. Continue to have your child read
everyday, report to school on time and get lots of rest. FCAT Saturday
will start tomorrow, Saturday, January 29, 2005. only for those students
who received notices and turned in the permission slip. Students should be
dropped off in front of the school by 8:55 a.m. and picked up at 11:00
a.m. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us or come by the
office. “You can not WIN if you do not BEGIN.”

Nutrition Tip of the Week:
Fresh is Best: Eat more fresh foods than processed foods. Processed foods
come in packages like boxes, bags, cans, etc. They have been altered from
their natural state. Eating too many of these types of foods can be bad
for our health. Focus on eating more fresh foods like whole fruits and
vegetables, fresh meat, etc. Think about how foods are naturally as they
come from the earth. A good guide is to shop the perimeter (the outside
walls) of the grocery store.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION
Kindergarten Orientation for the upcoming school year (05/06) will be on
Tuesday, May 3rd at 8:00am. Orientation will begin in the cafeteria,
followed by a guided walk through the Kindergarten classrooms. We will
have registration packets available along with some other documentation you
can take with you. If you know someone who has a Kindergartener starting
in the fall, please let them know about this upcoming event.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Registration for 05/06 will begin the first week in May. At this time you
can pre-register your child for kindergarten by filling out the
registration packet available in the office and providing 2 proofs of
residency.
The items needed to complete the registration process are:
Current physical
Immunization form
Copy of Certified Birth Certificate
Copy of Social Security card
Examples of proofs of residency are: current utility bill, phone bill,
lease agreement, mortgage bill, etc.
If you have any questions, please call the office at 878-8534.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TIP OF THE WEEK:
Exercise and Energy: Just 20 minutes of light exercise a day will
dramatically increase your energy levels. Stretching decreases stress-
induced fatigue. Use it or lose it: energy sticks around only as long as
you keep exercising.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for these upcoming events!
Please note that the items with an X indicate that we will be seeking
parent volunteers to assist us. If you are able to assist, please contact
the front office by calling 878-8534.

Good News At Chaires

Citizen’s of the Week
Congratulations to the Citizens of the Week! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Morning Announcement Helpers
We would like to thank the students who helped deliver morning
announcements from Ms. Burnett’s first grade class the week of January
18th. WAY TO GO!

News from the Art Room
As winter settles in the Kindergarten students are drawing winter trees.
Last week we learned how trees grow. The trunk branches off into two or
three smaller branches. The limbs get smaller and smaller the further we
get from the trunk. This week we put snow on our trees. The 1st and 2nd
graders are studying the Sioux tribe of Native Americans. We learned about
how the Sioux followed the Buffalo, and moved their camp every three days.
We are making Sioux Parfleche. Parfleches are cases used to store
everything from clothing to food. The 3rd graders are starting with real
clay to create Egyptian Model workshops. The 4th graders are finally
finished with their paiper mache' Greek vases. They have worked diligently
the whole year and have done a great job. The 5th graders are drawing
images to paint on the murals on the restroom walls. We will start painting
after FCAT reviews in February.
