PRINCIPAL’S PAWS
Take your child to work day will be held on April 22nd. Only grades 3rd-8th
will be allowed to participate. That means NO high schoolers will be
allowed to come to Chaires. Students in grades 3, 4, & 5 will be given
excused absences for going to work with their parent as long as the child
brings a note on the business letterhead to the front office. Parents must
notify their classroom teacher in advance if their child will be attending
work with them on April 22nd.

MS. HOPE’S CORNER
We are at that point in the school year when important decisions, regarding
promotions and/or retentions are being looked at. Parents should have some
indication by now as to whether or not your child is in jeopardy of not
being promoted. A brochure, "Read to Learn," was sent home this week to
parents of third graders. Also, there is a web site (www.fcatexplorer.com)
available with reading practice questions. Please review and/or use these
resources. Students in fifth grade will be visiting our feeder schools on
Tuesday, April 27th. Course request forms for Fairview should already have
been turned in by those students attending Fairview in the fall. A Parent
Night has been scheduled at Swift Creek for Monday, April 26, 2004 from
7:00 - 8:30 p.m. A flyer, with specifics, was sent home by the students
zoned for Swift Creek. Finally, the dates for FCAT test results arriving in
the district were placed in the previous newsletter for your information.

WINDS OF CHANGE
You may have noticed the display of pinwheels on the school campus this
month. Pinwheels are being displayed in communities across the state as
part of the Winds of Change awareness campaign for Child Abuse Prevention
Month. Research has shown that children need care that is responsive to
their developmental needs in order to thrive and grow into citizens who can
make positive contributions to society. However, having a baby does not
instill parents with the knowledge of child health and development they
need to understand and meet their child’s developmental needs. You can
help strengthen families in your community by: starting or joining a
parent support group, or offering to mentor a child or new parent. Parents
and caregivers can also call Florida’s Parent Help Line, 1-800-FLA-LOVE for
free, confidential assistance, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Do your part
to prevent child abuse in our community.

KIDS’ FISHING CLINIC
The St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission, the Florida Foundation for Responsible Angling,
the Sport Fish Restoration Program, and the National Marine Fisheries
Service is sponsoring a FREE fishing clinic. The clinic will be held on
May 22, 2004 from 11:00am until 2:00pm at Wooley Park in Panacea. This
clinic teaches responsible stewardship of Florida’s marine resources while
giving the participants an exciting new hobby. A limited number of rod and
reel combos, compliments of local sponsors, will be given away to
participants upon completion of the clinic.

IMMUNIZATIONS
If your child will be attending kindergarten or seventh grade next school
year, please be certain that he/she has all of the immunizations needed for
school entry. Documentation of needed immunizations must be on file at
your child’s school. Needed immunizations may be obtained from your
child’s health care provider or free of charge at the Leon County Health
Department. To schedule an immunization appointment at the Health
Department, please call 487-3155. In accordance with Florida State Statute
(s. 1003.22, F.S.), your child may be temporarily excluded from attendance
if he/she is not in compliance. Furthermore, the parents are responsible
for assuring that the child is in compliance.

TV TURN-OFF WEEK
The week of April 19-25, millions of children and adults around the world
will turn off their televisions and discover that life without TV may just
be more rewarding, fun, and relaxing. The TV Turn-Off Network in
Washington, DC, is sponsoring the 10th anniversary TV Turn-Off week and
hoping that child-serving organizations will get involved and help
publicize the effort. According to the group, television cuts into family
time, harms our children’s ability to read and succeed in school, and
contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity.
Here are just a few of the facts:
·This year, the average child in the United States will spend more time in
front of the television (1,023 hours) than in school (900 hours).
·Forty percent of Americans frequently or always watch television during
dinner.
·As U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher said at the kick off of TV-Turnoff
Week 2001, "We are raising the most overweight generation of youngsters in
American history...This week is about saving lives."
For more information, visit www.tvturnoff.org. If you’d like to organize
local activities in your area, visit www.tvturnoff.org/orgweek.htm for an
information packet with dozens of ideas, promotional artwork, public
relations tips, and more.
