PRINCIPAL¡¦S PAWSE
Another ¡§short¡¨ week has passed us by. We will let you know as soon as we
get word from our School Board as to if and/or when we will need to make up
our second ¡§hurricane day.¡¨ We did much better after Hurricane Ivan. We
had minimal damage (just a few tree limbs down) and no vandalism! We hope
that all of our Chaires family members fared as well.

MRS. MCCASKILL¡¦S CORNER
We can¡¦t always choose the situations that life brings us, but we can
choose the attitudes we will use to face them.¡¨ From Life¡¦s Little
Handbook of Wisdom. This week has been another successful week at Chaires
Elementary. We encourage you to continue to work with your children so that
the entire school year will be a Great Success! The first Dynamic
Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment will begin
September 14, 2004 and ends September 27, 2004. Progress Reports were sent
home on Tuesday, September 13, 2004. Just a reminder to call and schedule a
conference with your child¡¦s teacher to discuss their progress in the
classroom. The week of September 20-24, 2004 is the first Writes Upon
Request for all students in grades 2-5. Have a Great Weekend and remember
to: ¡§Enjoy happiness and treasure joy¡¨.

NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH
September is National Literacy Month. According to the Literacy Volunteers
of America, Inc., millions of adults across the country lack basic reading
and writing skills. This month we can do our part to fight illiteracy by
encouraging children to read. Most classroom teachers set aside a special
time each day for reading. Parents, let your children see you reading at
home, and take them frequently to the local library. You are the best role
model they can have. The Bookmobile visits Chaires twice a month on
Tuesdays from 4:30-7:30. The next scheduled visit is September 28th.

CLINIC NEWS
Thank you, to all of the parent volunteers who assisted us in the screening
process being preformed by the Leon County Health Dept. and Leon County
School Board Nursing Services on Thursday, September 9th. Because we were
able to get so many volunteers, the nurses were able to perform the testing
process with very little disruption to the classrooms. The students in
Kindergarten and 1st grade were tested for vision and hearing and all
students in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th were weighed and measured
for the BMI index. Results for the BMI will be sent home to all students
sometime in November. The students that did not pass the vision and
hearing testing will be re-tested by the Health Department and parents
notified by the nurse assigned to Chaires as soon as possible. Parents may
request a vision and hearing test at any time by contacting the clinic for
a referral. The tests are done during the school day and are free of
charge.

SCIENCE NEEDS
Thanks for all the supplies that have been sent in to the science room.
Keep it up! We will be doing some experiments this month and I could use
some graham crackers, white icing, pancake syrup, Tic Tac's and toilet
paper tubes. I have plenty of coffee filters, salt and straws.

ART NEWS
Why Do We Study Art? Art Education has gone through many changes recently.
Art is no longer the place where students make Santa's out of cotton balls.
Now students as young as three are learning to study and discuss fine works
of art. They are learning to recognize different styles of art and to
articulate information about the artworks. Service learning, ascetics, art
history, visual culture as well as studio art are being taught in modern
art classes. Art education gives students a different way of learning and
thinking than the standard academics, a chance to experiment with personal
creative expressionism. Art communicates meanings without words, it is the
universal language. Art helps us see the world through other peoples eyes,
and gives us a window into other times and cultures. Art education helps
students develop a broader understanding of our world and helps develop
empathy towards other people and cultures to develop curiosity, problem
solving and thinking skills. I would like to thank the Brigance family for
the donation of eleven short sleeve men¡¦s shirts to use as smocks. We still
need fourteen more so all of our students will have a smock.

FUNDRAISER UPDATE
Thank you to all the students and parents who turned in the fundraising
packets. The order was sent in on Friday September 10. We will be sending
in another order for those that came in late. The delivery date for the
items will be the beginning of November.
