PRINCIPAL’S PAWS
Did you get those progress alerts on Wednesday? If so, please remind your
child to continue to work very hard until the very last day of school! We
are also in the process of preparing for our incoming kindergarten
students. We will be holding kindergarten orientation and registration on
Tuesday, May 4th starting at 8:00 a.m. in the cafeteria. If you have a
friend or neighbor with a five year old who is in the Chaires school zone,
please be sure to have them attend! We will be giving out great
information and taking a tour of the kindergarten classes (during
instructional time) so that the parents and children will get an idea of
our curriculum and expectations of kindergarten children. As always, if
you have any questions, ideas or concerns, please feel free to call me at
any time. Or, plan to join us at our next School Advisory Council meeting
on Monday, May 10th at 5:30 in the Media Center!

MS. HOPE’S CORNER
Test Results Arriving
At this time, we are planning to send home individual test score reports
with the final report card on the last day of school. If you would like to
know the scores prior to that time, you may contact your child's teacher,
Mrs. Hope or Mrs. Moss. (We may share the scores with you, but may not
send home the report until the last day of school.) At this time, we do
NOT have back first and second grade SAT/9 scores. We also do NOT have
back the fourth and fifth grade criterion reference test scores (Sunshine
State Standards test with Level scores). We DO have back all third grade
scores. We also DO have back fourth grade writing scores. In addition, we
DO have back the fourth grade reading and math norm referenced test scores
(reported in percentile scores.)
We are anxiously awaiting arrival of additional data on our test scores.
(It is very important to us to look at the growth that each child has made
during this school year, as opposed to comparing last year's students at
one grade level to this year's students at that grade level!)

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION
All children attending kindergarten in August of 2004 and their parents are
invited to our Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at 8:00am
in the Cafeteria. We will have a short presentation from the schools’
administration, guidance counselor, PTO representative and a Kindergarten
Teacher. The presentation will be followed by a guided tour of the
Kindergarten classrooms. This will be a good time for you and your child
to get a feel for what Kindergarten at Chaires is all about. Registration
packets will be available. We look forward to your visit!

Attention 5th grade parents
We will be having our second meeting to discuss the end-of-the-year
activities. Many of you have helped already to put all this together but
we need to do some more. We will meet on Tuesday May 4th @ 6:30 in
Portable 326 (D) at the back of the school. We will give updates on the
status of the activities so far as well as sign up for others. Also,
we're asking that you send in 2 pictures of your child. One will be
returned, the other will not. One of the pictures should be a picture of
your child prior to starting school, and the other can be any age. If you
have any questions or can not attend the meeting but want to help, please
contact Debbie Karels @ 878-8534 or email--
[log in to unmask] Please help make this an exciting and
memorable time for your 5th grade child.

ACCELERATED READER
Congratulations to Paul Miller who has set a new record in Accelerated
Reading. Paul has earned 743 points this year and has broken an 8 year
record. WOW!
We would also like to salute Kody Cotton, in Mrs. Coleman’s class, for
entering the 100 point club. Great job Kody!

SCIENCE FAIR
Congratulations to Timariel Wiggins who will represent Chaires at the Mary
Brogan Museun of Arts & Sciences on May 1st, 2004 from 10:00am-2:00pm for
the Leon County Science Expo. Great job!

Chaires Students Adopt Soldiers in Iraq
In February, our student council adopted and had the Chaires students write
lovely Valentine cards for Sgt. Jason Brown in Iraq. He has returned to
Florida and will be thanking the boys and girls for their cards and letters
during one of our morning announcement shows. Our school is now planning
to adopt Brandon Loney, son of Mrs. Cindy Loney, second grade teacher.
Brandon is currently serving in Iraq, just outside of Baghdad. We will be
asking children to bring in donations that we can send to Brandon's unit.
At this time, these are some of the items that we are requesting - these
include things that we know he (and his friends) like but cannot get, as
well as some essentials that are not provided for them, such as twizzlers,
slim jims, snack foods (but not chocolate, since it will melt);
international calling cards, powdered gatoraide, deep woods OFF (spray pump
only), fly paper, stationery, pens, foot powder, and wet wipes. Your
support of Brandon and the Loney family during this time are greatly
appreciated!

UPCOMING EVENTS
Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for these upcoming events!
Please note that the items with an X indicate that we will be seeking
parent volunteers to assist us. If you are able to assist, please contact
the front office by calling 878-8534.
