PRINCIPAL’S PAWS
Happy New Year! It’s so nice to see everyone back at school and working
hard. Our word for the week this week has been CHALLENGE. I expect that
the students will need to work much harder during the second semester as
the curriculum gets much tougher, but we’re all up for the challenge!
Please encourage your child (ren) to work hard to get their class work done
at school and their homework done at home. As always, thank you for
keeping your children at home when they are sick! (We’ve had some high
fevers and stomach problems that we don’t want spreading around the
school!) Keep your eye out on Wednesday next week for your child’s 2nd
nine weeks report card.

More News from the Principal . . . .
a word or two about REZONING!
The Rezoning Committee has worked long and hard to review student
demographic data, take community input, and develop a brand new elementary
school zone taking into consideration many factors. As a result, this
coming Tuesday evening, a final proposal will go to Open Hearing at the
School Board Meeting at the Howell Center on Pensacola Street at 6:00 p.m.
It is likely that the proposal that has been more than six months in the
making will be accepted. As a result, approximately 35-40% of the Chaires
population will be rezoned to the new elementary school currently being
constructed in Southwood. If you have not looked at the rezoning website
to see if your home is in the proposed new school zone, please do so now!

Visit this website and zoom in to find your current address so that you
will know for certain which school zone your home is in for the 2008-09
school year. Parents of current Chaires third and fourth graders will have
a tough CHOICE to make! Children going into fourth and fifth grades who
are rezoned will have the option to go to a brand new school or they may
be “grandfathered” in to their current school if the parents will provide
their transportation and IF THEY COMPLETE THE SCHOOL CHOICE FORM AND TURN
IT IN BY THE MARCH 1ST DEADLINE. Next week, after the Leon County School
Board has made their final decision, we will be sending home a School
Choice form with every student – just in case you need one!
MCBREARTY'S CORNER
Nathan Vinson will represent Chaires Elementary School in the 4H/Tropicana
Public Speaking County Contest on Saturday, January 19 at Perry Paige

Way to go Nathan!

MUSIC WISH LIST
Our students will begin using the keyboards during music and Mrs.
Kilpatrick is in desperate need of AA batteries. It takes 6 for each
keyboard. You can drop any donations in the front office.

PHONE BOOK RECYCLING
We are collecting old phone books for recycling in the Guidance Hallway
until February 1st.

P.E. News
The Champions fitness program is coming back to Chaires this month starting
on January 23rd. The Champions program is being offered to students in
grades 3-5 every Monday and Wednesday from 2:00-2:45pm. The program will
run until the end of April and is free of charge. Students do not have to
attend our extended day program to participate. Your child will bring home
an informational form on the program with a sign up sheet that must be
turned in by January 23rd. Please take advantage of this wonderful
opportunity for your child. If you have any questions about the program,
please feel free to contact Coach Escobedo or Coach Herzog at 878-8534.

Box Tops for Education
Chaires PTSO just received a check for $869.90 for all the Box Tops that

for cutting, counting and mailing in all the Box Tops. Keep sending in your
Box Tops, as you can see every one counts.
