In accordance HB 1069 (2023), Leon County School Board has approved the attached process for those parents that would like to limit their child's access to media center and classroom libraries.

Only parents that want to limit their child's access through, Parent/guardian Permission, will need to complete the FOCUS form. LCS plans to open Media Centers for student check out on Monday, August 14th. If you plan to limit your child's access please complete form as soon as possible. The directions for completing the FOCUS form are on the attached form.

Florida Elementary Reading Scholarship Program:

Public school students in grades 3 through 5 who scored a Level 1 or 2 on their FSA ELA may be eligible for a reading scholarship. The scholarship is $500 and could be used by families for services such as afterschool tutoring in reading.

Scholarships are still available, and the application will be open until the end of April. This program is administered by the state of Florida.

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Yesterday we announced changes to our COVID-19 protocols which were in line with current guidance from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Hours after our announcement we received information from the State of Florida Department of Health (FDOH) that is not in line with the CDC. By law we are required to follow all rules as set by FDOH. Positive students will now be required to stay home for 10 days unless they receive a negative Covid-19 test and are asymptomatic or have a note from their doctor allowing them to return to school. Over the last several hours, Hurricane Michael has grown in both strength and intensity. According to most forecasts, it will likely make landfall somewhere along the coast of the Big Bend followed by a gradual turn towards the northeast and Leon County. We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief as Leon County was spared from the worst of Hurricane Irma. Our team has spent tireless hours caring for evacuees from throughout our state and here locally. Last evening, 11 of our schools hosted 3,000 people in shelters. The administrators at those schools never hesitated to step up. Staff from throughout the school district volunteered their time and materials to ensure that things ran as smoothly as possible.

The Community Conversation that was set for tonight, February 1, at Chiles High School has been canceled.
As you may know, Leon High School sustained a small fire this morning and we are currently assessing that matter. We will reschedule the Community Conversation at a later date.

The Godby students will be begin filing Tax Returns on every Monday from now through April 11th (with the exception of the week of March 14th). We will be open in the Media Center from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. We would love to have the opportunity of preparing your return and saving you money! This is a FREE service. As you are aware, several of our schools—Cobb, Godby, Lincoln, and Rickards—recently received threats via social media outlets. We would like to assure parents and the community that we do not take these threats lightly and that extra security was placed at each of the affected school sites. We have been monitoring this situation throughout the day and will continue to closely monitor the situation in the days to come. We will have increased security at our schools this week.

Monday, January 25

* Catch the Rays and Read Day - Bring a pair of sunglasses and a blanket to school. We will wear our shades outside and enjoy reading in the Florida sunlight.

* Sealey Elementary Book Drive Begins - Each student is asked to donate a new or gently used book. These books will be given to a local women's shelter for children to read for fun as well as for literacy support in homework. Friday is the last day for the book drive.

Tallahassee-Today, the Florida Department of Education released the Alpine independent review of the 2015 Florida Standards Assessment.

Alpine agreed with district reports regarding problems with test administration: "the spring FSA 2015 was problematic. Problems were encountered on just about every aspect of the administration, from the initial training and preparation to the delivery of the tests themselves." [pg.11 Executive Summary]
