As Americans living in the melting pot of the world, nearly all of us have a connection to the global community, as well as to past and current events happening around the world. These connections may cause us to feel strongly one way or the other with regard to global conflicts, such as the ones presently occurring in the Middle East, Ukraine, and elsewhere. Our students are witnessing the division on all sides, and of course have their own opinions and reflections.
Today, a stun gun was discovered in a student's backpack. There was not a threat to the safety and security of our campus. No one was injured and the situation was resolved quickly. Parents and law enforcement were notified.
We will continue to be vigilant and committed to keeping our campus safe.
If you have chosen to restrict your child's media center access and would like to remove the restriction, please click the following link and follow the directions to complete the form:

As you are aware, our school will be closed tomorrow as we brace for any possible impacts caused by Hurricane Idalia. Our district has also made the decision to keep schools closed on Thursday, August 30 too.
Once the storm passes, LCS staff will evaluate any impact to our schools and make a determination for school operations on Friday.

After student dismissal today, a student reported that he saw what was later determined to be a broken, empty, BB gun in his peer’s backpack. Administration acted quickly to retrieve the BB gun. There were no threats to any students or staff during the ordeal. School administrators, District Safety and Security along with the Tallahassee Police Department worked quickly and cohesively to resolve the incident.

Yesterday we announced changes to our COVID-19 protocols which were in line with current guidance from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Hours after our announcement we received information from the State of Florida Department of Health (FDOH) that is not in line with the CDC. By law we are required to follow all rules as set by FDOH. Positive students will now be required to stay home for 10 days unless they receive a negative Covid-19 test and are asymptomatic or have a note from their doctor allowing them to return to school. Please see

If you need help completing or computer access to complete the online kindergarten registration, please call (850) 488-5840 to reserve your time slot. Assistance will be available July 27, 2021 (9:00 am - 11:30 am), July 28, 2021 (1:00 pm - 3:00 pm), and July 29, 2021 (9:00 am - 11:30 am).
Summer is officially here for our students, and our teachers are completing their tasks in order to finish out their year as well. We are proud of our Safe Start and equally Safe Finish and are ready to begin looking ahead to the next school year.
This past year and a half has shown that even through unprecedented challenges we are stronger when we stand together. I am extremely grateful for your support and flexibility over the past two years. I feel blessed to have been able to return to John G. Riley Elementary School, the elementary school I attended, to serve as principal. As a Riley student, I was taught that education is the key to developing who you are in life. Education is the one thing that can never be taken away.
If your child has medication in the school clinic, this is a reminder for you to pick up the medication on or before the last day of school.
Please remember that students cannot transport medications. Therefore all medication must be picked up by a parent/guardian. Medication that is not picked up by June 21st will be disposed.
We will be having Computer/Chromebook drop off days for our Digital Academy students. It will be June 9-11, from 8:30-12:00 and 1:00-3:30. You do not need an appointment. Simply drive through the Parent Drop off Loop and someone will be available to come to your car.
If you have any questions, please call 850-488-5840 someone will assist you.

Today we were notified of severe weather in our area. As a result, we implemented our safety procedures. Students spent about 50 minutes in their secure locations.
We are extremely proud of our students for their good behavior and patience during that extended period of time. Lunch was delayed for some classes. However, we were able to make sure all students received lunch upon receiving the all clear.

Today we received notice that an individual has tested positive for COVID-19. The contact tracing investigation determined that there were no significant exposures at Riley within 72 hours of testing. Therefore, the Department of Health will not be contacting any families as it is not necessary for any other student or staff member to quarantine at this time.
In order to streamline communications we are making a slight change to the reporting of positive on-campus Covid-19 cases. Beginning next week we will be sending out one email at the end of the day instead of the possibility of receiving multiple emails during the day.
No other protocols or procedures are being changed at this time. We continue to follow the Safe Start LCS plan approved by a community Task Force and monitored by the Covid-19 Rapid Response Team. For the James S. Rickards High School football team, the road to the FHSAA Class 5A title game during a national pandemic has been filled with challenges at every turn. In times of uncertainty, unpredictability, and potentially overwhelming stress, it is especially important to deliberately pause to identify resources and activities that can help us maintain our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Superintendent Hanna and the entire LCS family understands that the 2020-2021 school year has presented challenges to students, teachers, and families. Students are experiencing increased levels of anxiety and depression due to having to maneuver through new ways of learning and attempting to stay connected with others while also social distancing.
Information about the nation's response to the Covid-19 Pandemic can sometimes feel overwhelming. Protocols change as medical experts continue to study the virus. Their findings help identify best practices and strategies that can keep people as safe as possible during this time.
Many of you have been contacting the Leon County Department of Health with questions about our quarantine process. I have spent every morning the past three weeks visiting each one of our schools and I have yet to see any student-at any school-at any level-acting irresponsibly or not wearing a mask.
