Today in Building 100 (Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st Grade) we had some smoke and burnt smell coming out of the vent. We evacuated the building and called Chaires Fire department. They arrived and checked our building. They found an overheated motor in one of our AC units. LCS maintenance department was called to repair the unit. All students and staff are safe and returning to class.

Are community was largely spared from total devastation from Hurricane Idalia. However, we have many families still without power and damage to their homes. Our school has power and will be open to provide a safe place for all students. We will be providing a hot breakfast and lunch for our panthers. For the safety of all, please do not turn left into parent pick up. By waiting to turn left you cause an unnecessary traffic jam and could cause a wreck. Our procedure is to go to the park and turn around in the parking lot and enter Chaires by turning right into parent pick up. In addition, you are not allowed to drop off your student in the front of the school until the gate is closed.

Welcome Back Students and Parents!

We are very excited about the start of the 2023-24 school year. We are looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow for Orientation (1pm to 3pm). This is your chance to meet your student's teacher before school starts. We will have transportation, PTO, the Good News club and EDEP personnel in the cafeteria for help with any questions or concerns. In addition, we will have staff members handing out maps and giving you directions so you can find your way around campus. Regardless of your zoned middle school, parents must complete a proof residency. LCS will be pushing out the 5th and 8th Grade Verification Form to all 5th and 8th graders in Leon County Schools through parent portal so parents can upload proofs or let the district know they are emailing proofs to the Office of Admissions. Due to the bad weather, we had students and teachers practice our tornado drills. The students were awesome and followed all directions. In addition, we had to delay lunch transition because of the high winds and heavy rain. Everyone is safe and no damage to the school. We are back to normal operations, but still having issues with our phone system.

One important note: "You must apply for school choice if you are trying to register a new student even if you have a student already at that school." Sibling support is not automatically granted unless you submit a school choice application! For example, you must submit the school choice for all Kindergarteners. Chief Williams and I just finished a briefing with Leon County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service in Tallahassee. The 72-hour weather forecast for Leon County does not include any tropical storm force winds in our area with only the possibility for wind gusts between 20-35 mph on both Thursday and Friday. They have also reduced the amount of anticipated rain, as a result of Hurricane Ian, down to less than 1 inch.

All I can say is "WOW". What a way to end the week! We had a great turnout (well over 300 grand panthers) for Grand Panther Day! It was great seeing everyone on campus spending time with their grandchildren. It is nice to see things getting back to normal. I want to send a shout out to our PTO for setting this up. What a great week at Chaires! It is nice to have the students back on campus and learning. We are excited to improve upon the incredible growth from last year. Thank you for your patience and understanding with our parent pickup delays. This morning was a little better and I believe it will be back to normal by mid next week. We are working with Transportation to ensure our routes are picked up on time. We have several new drivers, and they are working very hard to learn the routes. * Gate will be open at 7:45am for car rider's drop-off
* First Bell is at 8:25am and Late Bell is at 8:30am
* Breakfast and Lunch is free for all students
* Please have your student ready to get out of the car to keep the line moving. Parents cannot walk their students to class.
* Make sure your student knows how they are getting home.

A PTO representative will be set up in our breezeway to assist with signing up to volunteer, provide some general information about upcoming events, and sell some school merchandise. Having fun in Summer school!

Our students that participated in our Student Learning Loss Recovery Program had a blast! These students and faculty worked very hard to increase their learning gains. After looking at the data from our teachers, all students made gains! Our teachers are so creative and passionate about their profession, it's hard not to see our students grow! I am very proud to be a part of Chaires community.

A huge thank you to everyone for supporting our Book Fair and Skate World share night! Both events will help support our yearlong literacy initiatives and teacher appreciation week coming up in May. Your support for our school is greatly appreciated!

On Monday March 7 through 11, we will have a table setup in the front of the school (between 8:30 and 2:30) with all the jackets and coats. Feel free to look through the pile of clothes to find your child's belongings. After March 11, we will take the remaining jackets to a local shelter.

What a week in Panther Land!

A special shout out to our wonderful Reading Coach​ Ms. Myra Harp​,for putting together Mission Read-a-lot! We have had Ron's Big Mission read-aloud to start us off. We have had several guests come to our classrooms to read to our students. Superintendent Rocky Hanna and School Board Member Rosanne Wood lead the way. In addition, we had four FSU football players, and BowStern representatives, among countless others come out and read. Students who are sent to the clinic will be evaluated by the clinic staff for the following symptoms of COVID. If a student is found to be symptomatic, they will be sent home. Further evaluation and guidance will be the parent’s responsibility.

Yesterday we announced changes to our COVID-19 protocols which were in line with current guidance from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Hours after our announcement we received information from the State of Florida Department of Health (FDOH) that is not in line with the CDC. By law we are required to follow all rules as set by FDOH. Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a joyous holiday break. Over the break, we have had a new road put in to help alleviate traffic on Chaires Cross Road. Starting tomorrow, you will enter through the double gate by Chaires Sports Complex. We will have balloons on the gate to help lead the way. The entrance by Little Chaires will be closed to traffic turning off Chaires Cross Road. It will be an exit only from 6:45am to 8:45am and 12:30pm to 3:30pm. We will have cones blocking the entrance, please do not go around them.
